Homewood voters will have referendum question on March ballot

HF Chronicle editors Tom Houlihan and Marilyn Thomas

a plate from the first print edition of the newspaper.

The first print edition of the H-F Chronicle will hit the streets on Dec. 2.

The Homewood-Flossmoor community’s own newspaper, published online for well over a year, has come to life on newsprint, with 5,000 copies widely available throughout both towns this week, free of charge.

The inaugural edition will be distributed at more than two dozen local businesses, both libraries and at several park district buildings. (For a full list of locations, see below.)

newspaper came off the

Chronicle volunteers will hand them out in person at Homewood and Flossmoor Metra stations on Dec. 3 and 4, at Walt’s Food Center on Dec. 5, and at St. Joseph Church and Infant Jesus of Prague Church after mass on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6.

The first edition also will be handed out at special events including Holiday Lights in Homewood, Winterfest in Flossmoor, and at a special Dec. 5 origami party at the Homewood Public Library, where young patrons can learn to make our version of the traditional “newsman’s cap” from the first edition. Some residents have stepped forward to distribute the Chronicle to friends and neighbors.

“People have been asking us to go to print since the Chronicle began,” said Eric Crump, the Homewood journalist who launched the publication in June 2014.

With more than $4,000 donated by the community this fall, plans were soon under way to start the presses. More than two dozen advertisers—from local business owners to local government agencies—supported the first edition.

“People are so excited to hear the Chronicle will be in print,” said Marilyn Thomas, a Homewood resident and the second volunteer journalist who helped launch the paper. “It will reach lots of readers who don’t use a computer to get their local news.”

A print edition is set to be published monthly starting in 2016.

Tom Houlihan, a veteran journalist from Flossmoor who joined the Chronicle staff to establish Flossmoor coverage, said community residents have been enthusiastic about the paper since its inception.

“People in Homewood and Flossmoor really understand how important it is to have a local newspaper,” he said. “Years from now, people will look at a copy of the December 2015 H-F Chronicle and say, ‘This is a collector’s edition.’”
