Flossmoor residents Katie Larocca and Tricia Butcher are teaming up to raise funds that benefit their sons and others affected by autism.
Get Fit for Autism will raise money for the Communication Development program through the Southwest Cook County Cooperative Association for Special Education.
The event will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Homewood Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club. It will offer two hours of yoga and indoor cycle classes for one great cause.
Tickets are $30 per class and include pizza, refreshments and a raffle ticket. Participants can sign up for as many classes as they want.
“We want people to be able to exercise a little or a lot. Indoor cycle and yoga are two ends of the fitness spectrum but a great complement to each other. We hope people will mix and match for an amazing workout,” said co-chair Tricia Butcher.
People at all fitness levels are welcome. Participants for indoor cycle must be high school age or older.
The Communication Development Program serves students from many school districts throughout the south suburbs.
The philosophy of the Communication Development Program is for learners with significant speech-language, social-communication or autism spectrum disorders to recognize and achieve their full potential.
Students are provided with opportunities to apply strategies that capitalize on strengths and accommodate learning styles in an environment that integrates academics, communication and socialization.
Elizabeth Mitchell, the Communication Development supervisor, maintains the philosophy that it takes a community to build a community.
“Our learners, families, and staff members are grateful for the contributions and participation from our greater community. These efforts provide our program more opportunities, experiences, and resources in serving our students with exceptionalities,” she said.
