It’s a good time to be a Cub fan in the South Suburbs

“Holiday Lights in Homewood” from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, will offer the community an opportunity to celebrate the season with an evening of lights, shopping, family activities and a poetic window display.

Tivoli lights, a feature of the newly constructed Martin Square streetscape, are expected to be shining bright. The lights were the one feature of the streetscape that wasn’t quite  ready for Fall Fest, the first event held on the renovated Martin Avenue.

New to the festival this year will be the Window Walking Tour created by window designer Margot Hallahan. Festival goers will be able to read Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening” as displayed on windows starting on Ridge Road and with the complete poem at 18102 Martin Ave. Each window will portray the beauty of a snowy, winter woodland scene.

“It’s always magical to see Homewood put on its holiday finery for ‘Holiday Lights,'” said Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld. “We are especially pleased to have our windows dressed with Robert Frost’s poetry to add to the magic this year. We are delighted this has become the highlight for many families during the holiday season.”

The evening will also include traditional festival features, including a tree lighting ceremony in Irwin Park, an outdoor marketplace, ice sculpture carving demonstrations, a live reindeer petting zoo, an antique car parade, the arrival of Santa Claus and his friends on the Homewood fire truck and more, according to a news release from the village.

The tree lighting ceremony will be at 7 p.m. at Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave., when Santa and his friends arrive on a fire engine to flip the switch for the grand tree lighting.

In addition, Foundation 153, a fundraising nonprofit organization that supports Homewood School District 153, will sell premium-grade Fraser fir trees and garland from Michigan with easy pick-up and loading assistance. Sales will begin as early as 3 p.m.

The outdoor market will open at 6 p.m. featuring live reindeer, refreshments and shopping. Ice sculpting demonstrations by Nadeau’s Ice Sculptures will begin at 7:15 p.m.

Free musical trolleys will take shoppers all around downtown Homewood to take advantage of the Holiday Lights specials and refreshments.
