School board members say state actions could do additional harm to District 153

Homewood trustees will consider a measure Tuesday that would provide incentives for a new baseball bat manufacturer to establish a shop in town.

Homewood Bat Company has applied for $100,000 from the village’s Business Incentive Program to help it acquire 17841 and 17845 Bretz Drive. Owner Todd Pals and his investors are providing the rest of the nearly $700,000 it will take to purchase the property and construct the shop, according to information from the village.

The company plans to sell bats from the shop, but its main focus will be on producing customized bats for customers that could include Major League Baseball players.

In other business, the board will consider an ordinance amending the planned unit development guidelines to enable Menard’s to proceed with its plans to expand its store at 17545 Halsted St.

The board will also:

  • consider whether to endorse two Class 8 property tax incentive applications. One is a renewal application from Star Investments LLC/Homewood Disposal for the property located at 1501 West 175th St. The other is from Zenah Taher for the property located at 3355 183rd St.;
  • consider appointing Cate Roberts to the Beautification Committee, Levi Glass to the Fire and Police Commission and and Thomas Brabec to the Chicago South Suburban Local Mass Transit Committee;
  • consider a request from Terry Sullivan, owner of property located at 1844 Evergreen Road, for variances from the minimum lot width and lot area in order to consolidate two 25 foot lots into one 50 foot by 125 foot substandard lot.

The board expects to convene in closed session following the public meeting to discuss employment of a specific employee or employees and probable litigation.

The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room on the lower level of Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
