H-F boys varsity golfers take conference title

Students, parents, community members and educators can nominate excellent Homewood-Flossmoor High School teachers for the 2016 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Stanley C. Golder Leadership Award, according to a news release from Golden Apple. Both awards recognize exceptional educators and their contributions to building a stronger, better-educated society.

The deadline is by Jan. 5, 2016.

The Golden Apple Award will recognize 10 outstanding full-time high school classroom teachers. Nominees should be educators who have made a significant difference to students and the school community.

Each Golden Apple Award recipient receives a tuition-free, spring quarter sabbatical to study at Northwestern University and a $5,000 cash award. Award recipients also become lifetime fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators.

The Golder Award will spotlight one principal or head of school at a public or private school. The award is presented in memory of Stanley C. Golder, a founding board member of Golden Apple, whose energy, creativity and commitment to Golden Apple’s mission set the highest standard for dedication and accomplishment.

To be eligible for the Golder Award, candidates must have served as a principal or head of school at one or more public or non-public schools for five or more consecutive school years. Strong candidates have exhibited exemplary performance and outstanding leadership in education.

Recipients receive a cash award of $10,000 — $2,000 to be used for his/her own personal professional development, and $8,000 for a school project of the winner’s choice.

Recipients of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching and The Stanley C. Golder Award are notified during surprise visits to their schools in the spring.

In addition, the recipients will be recognized at the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Leadership annual event in the fall of 2016 and during the broadcast of the televised show on WTTW.
