A rabid bat was discovered Wednesday in the vicinity of the 1400 block of Douglas Avenue in Flossmoor.
According to the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control, the bat was submitted for rabies examination and determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory. The department advises anyone who has been exposed to or bitten by a bat to contact their doctor.
All residents should keep dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when out of their homes, the county department says. Pets that do not have a current rabies vaccination should immediately be inoculated with rabies vaccine.
The animal control department advises area residents to not handle bats, skunks or other wild animals. Persons who find dead or downed bats or skunks on their property or roadway should call Cook County Department of Animal Control at 708-974-6140.
The Flossmoor Police Department Thursday announced the discovery of the rabid bat in an e-newsletter to residents.
