Harris joins board members Lisa Korajczyk, Jennifer Muryn, Sara Sterbenc, Chris Flor, Murray Barr and George Bouchie Jr.

Bouchie, who had previously served on the board, won election in April 2015. No one ran for the second open position. A call for nominations brought in nearly a dozen interested persons and Harris was selected from that group.

Harris said he was looking for another way to volunteer in the community after having served as chair of Cub Scout Pack 304. He also is a volunteer on the District 153 Foundation.

Harris, whose mother was a school librarian for the Chicago Public Schools for more than 30 years, said he first got interested in reading through comic books. The latest book he’s checked out of the library is The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America by Nicholas Lemann. And, he’s reviewing SharePoint for Dummies to familiarize himself with the Microsoft software.

Sitting through his first meeting listening to discussions of the budget and long-range planning, Harris said he knows he’s got a lot to learn but he’s anxious to contribute. The board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the library.

Harris works for Cook County as deputy chief of the Oak Forest Health Center at the former Oak Forest Hospital. He’s also been a Cook County sheriff and held other administrative jobs during his 23-year career.

Harris is a graduate of Governors State University. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration. Harris is married and the father of two children. The family moved to Homewood in 2007.
