Metra to unveil Homewood station renovation plans at public meeting July 10

The process leading to a major renovation of Homewood’s train station is moving forward.

Metra will hold an informational meeting in the Homewood village hall on Monday, July 10, at 7 p.m. to present plans for the renovation of the Homewood Metra and Amtrak stations.

Proposed renovations include: reconstruction of the east and west entrances; installation of new stairs and ADA compliant ramps; new stairs leading to the Amtrak platform; reconstruction of the Amtrak platform and canopy; installation of water seepage barriers and a drainage system in the tunnel; new tunnel walls, ceiling and lighting; and reconfiguration of parking on the Park Avenue side of the station.

Construction of the Amtrak portion of the station is scheduled to begin next year. Improvements to the Metra station will take place when funding becomes available.

The public and commuters are encouraged to attend.

The project has been high on the village’s priority list for years. The engineering work to develop the major renovation plan was done with grant money obtained by the village.

In 2015, Metra completed a number of maintenance projects, including repairing the stairs leading to its platform, installing new tunnel and elevator lighting, repairing ceiling tiles and repainting the tunnel and stairwell.
