H-F school board narrows list of superintendent candidates

The District 233 school board will be interviewing finalist candidates the week of March 8 as it moves toward filling the superintendent’s job at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Superintendent Von Mansfield will be retiring in June 2022. The person who will follow him is being hired to begin work in July 2021 as superintendent-elect and serve with Mansfield for a year’s transition period. Mansfield has been superintendent for 13 years. He was H-F principal for seven years before that.

The board is working with BWP & Associates consultants which has advertised the position and done the initial work to screen candidates before presenting the school board with persons that met the required qualifications.  Mark Friedman of BWP said in January that about 30 educators were interested in the position.

BWP then selected a pool of candidates for interviews conducted by the District 233 Personnel Committee. Gerald Pauling, committee chair, said four meetings were held over the last two weeks to interview “multiple candidates.”

The week of March 1, the committee had interviews with “internal and external stakeholders” for input on the work of the superintendent and the candidates.

BWP earlier conducted an online survey and received approximately 650 responses from H-F staff, students and community members on the qualities they want to see in the next superintendent. BWP also conducted a Zoom meeting for community members to offer input. The consultants conducted several other information sessions. They took all the information and gave the school board a leadership profile.
