Homewood police apprehended a Freeport man suspected of robbing the Mobil gas station at 17500 Dixie Highway late Saturday, Nov. 1.

According to police, Devon Smallwood, 35, was located by officers responding to a report of an armed robbery at the gas station just before 11:30 p.m.

Smallwood allegedly entered the station, displayed a semi-automatic handgun and demanded $300 from the clerk. Police said Smallwood, a convicted felon, had a loaded handgun in his possession when he was located still at the station.

The Cook County State’s Attorney Office approved charges of Class X armed robbery and Class 3 felony unlawful possession of a weapon.

Smallwood remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Monday, Nov. 3.
