Area Food Banks. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are still in doubt after a judge ruled Friday that the federal government should use contingency funds to provide benefits during the government shutdown. The administration did not immediately comply but asked for clarification from the court. The village of Flossmoor posted links to food resources in the area, including the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s food pantry map and a list of pantries serving the South Suburbs.

Vikings Win in First Round of Playoffs. The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Vikings (6-4) beat Curie Condors (8-2) 56 to 8 on Friday, Oct. 31, in the first round of IHSA Class 8A playoffs. The Vikings will take on Lockport (7-3) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, for round two.

Homewood Free Leaf Pickup. Homewood’s free leaf pick up will start Wednesday, Nov. 12. No sticker is required for bags of leaves left on the curb for pick up. Yard waste can be placed in brown paper yard waste bags or in yard waste carts. Yard waste cannot be placed inside plastic garbage bags. Yard waste bags and containers cannot exceed 50 pounds each and should be able to be reasonably lifted by one person. Bundled and tied branches should be cut to 3 to 4 foot lengths and require a yard waste sticker. Yard waste will be picked up on regularly scheduled garbage days with a Homewood Disposal Yard Waste sticker. 

Thornton Township Turkey Giveaway. Thornton Township will be giving away turkeys from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at township hall, 333 E. 162nd St., South Holland. Holbrook Road Resurfacing Project. The Cook County Department and Transportation and Highways has just begun a resurfacing project on Holbrook Road from Dixie Highway to Halsted Street. The work should be completed by Nov. 26, weather permitting. Holbrook Road will remain open throughout construction and no detours are expected, but motorists should expect some delays and lane reductions when traveling through the project area during the day. Any questions about this project should be directed to Homewood Village Engineer Max Massi at 708-206-3470.

Propert Tax Bills. Cook County 5th District Commissioner Kisha McCaskill announced that delayed property tax bills are expected to be mailed no later than Nov. 17. Payments will be due in mid-December. Check here for updates.

Flossmoor Streetscape Update. Flossmoor officials issued the final update on the downtown streetscape improvement project on Friday, Oct. 31. The project is complete, except for some concrete repairs and repairs to business entries will happen this week plus more landscaping. Last week, D Construction completed the pavement marking throughout the area and began planting trees.

Teen Leadership Council. Teens meet from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. in the Fort at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Teens help with programming ideas, book suggestions or anything else that will help make the world around us a better place. Register here.

Lacross Pickup & Play. Kids 14 and under are invited to a lacrosse clinic from 6 to 7 p.m. at Churchill School, 1300 190th St. in Homewood. Register here.  

Cookies & Comics. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host an opportunity to discuss comics and enjoy treats from 6 to 6:45 p.m. 

Selective Mutism Documentary Screening. H-F Science Pub will host special screening of the documentary “Selective Mutism – Getting The Word Out” at 7 p.m. in the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. The film, directed by Eve Keepings de Jesus, raises awareness about selective mutism, a complex anxiety disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak in certain social situations. Wednesday, Nov. 5

Junior Varsity Tennis. Wednesdays at 4 p.m. through Dec. 17 at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, the H-F Park District will offer tennis sessions to kids aged 11 to 14. Junior Varsity is played on a 60-foot court with reduced speed green dot tennis balls, so students can master longer rallies and proper ball control. Players learn how to properly position themselves to execute groundstrokes and volleys, hit with purpose, serve and ultimately sustain a rally of varying speed and duration. Bergstein’s Fine Arts Show. Bergstein’s NY Deli, 18064 Martin Ave. in Homewood, will host a fine arts show from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Stop by to celebrate student artists and musicians.

Friday, Nov. 7

Arthritis Aqua. Fridays through Nov. 28 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. This gentle exercise class helps participants decrease pain and stiffness, improve or maintain joint flexibility, and gain muscle strength, balance and coordination. Class structured for people with arthritis but anyone is welcome. Activities are tailored to participants’ abilities and skill levels, and participants do not need to be able to swim. For ages 18 and up. The fee is $40 for H-F Park District residents, $60 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Saturday, Nov. 8

Ho-Flo Cranksgiving Ride. GoodSpeed Cycle will host its annual food drive on two wheels. It’s part bike ride, part scavenger hunt. At noon, riders pick up a manifest from the bike shop at 2125 W. 183rd St. that will list area grocery stores and needed items. Using any preferred route, riders buy at least one item from every store and deliver to Rabid Brewing, 17759 Bretz Drive in Homewood, by 4 p.m. The drive will benefit Restoration Ministries. Register here

Unsung Modernist in the Mid-Century Southland. Marcy Dinius, professor at DePaul University, will give a lection on Homewood architect John McPherson from 2 to 4 p.m. at Black Bear Lodge in the Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood. There will be a bonfire, and seasonal pies will be served. In honor of McPherson’s Scottish/Irish roots guests are invited to wear plaid. Tickets are available here.

STEM Saturday.
 Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Books Without Borders. The next book discussion will take place from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at Beyond Borders Café, 1036 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor. The book is “Stamped – Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. It will be available at the Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway in Homewood, and at www.bookshop.org. Everyone is welcome.

NextGen Voices Mix, Mingle & Mobilize. NextGen Voices will host a reception and fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Copper Still, 1961 Ridge Road in Homewood, for Yumeka Brown, candidate for Illinois’ 2nd District congressional seat.

Friday, Nov. 14

Fido’s Landing Fundraiser. The dog rescue organization’s medical fund needs more funds to help dogs in crisis. At 7:30 p.m., Fido’s Landing, 2207 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, will host an event for open conversation, a look behind the scenes and the chance to see exactly how your involvement can change lives. There will be drinks, a 50/50 raffle and raffle baskets. RSVP to [email protected].

Open House at H-F Racquet & Fitness Club. H-F Park District will host an open house from noon to 4 p.m. at the club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, to give visitors a chance to see new fitness equipment that recently was installed.

Sunday, Nov. 23

Butterball Burner 5K Fun Run. The annual run will begin at 8 a.m. at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. All ages and abilities welcome. The untimed event is great for family and friends wanting to burn off some calories before the Thanksgiving feast. Fee is $30 until Nov. 18, then $35. Click here to register.
