Flossmoor Board of Trustees’ Sept. 1 meeting is canceled for the Labor Day holiday. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, in village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.

Homewood Disposal Holiday Schedule. Monday pick up will be on Tuesday. Tuesday pick up will be on Wednesday, Wednesday pick up will be on Thursday. Thursday pick up will be on Friday. Friday pick up will be on Saturday.

Metra Schedule Monday. Metra will operate a Sunday/Holiday schedule on Monday, Sept. 1 (Labor Day).

Flossmoor Public Library Closures. The library at 1000 Sterling Ave. will be closed after noon Friday, Sept. 5, for a staff in-service. The library will be closed all day Saturday, Sept. 6, for the Hidden Gem Half Marathon.

District 153 Superintendent Search Survey. From Wednesday, Sept. 3, through Wednesday, Sept. 10, District 153 will post a link for residents to a survey offering residents a chance to give their opinions on what the district needs in its next superintendent. The survey will be available at hsd153.org. The search firm School Exec Connect will offer a summation of the responses to the school board as it works to find a replacement for Superintendent Scott McAlister who retires in 2026.

New Vital Records Appointment System. Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon announced a new  appointment system starting Sept. 2 for vital records services at the Markham Courthouse, 16501 Kedzie Ave. The system is intended to reduce wait times and improve convenience for residents seeking birth, death, marriage and other records. Wednesday, Sept. 3

Aqua Zumba with Gigi. This class is a low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. starting at 9:30 a.m. Fee is $10 for club members, $20 for guests.

Donuts at James Hart School. The Little Red Donut Truck will be in the James Hart School parking lot (off Aberdeen Street) from 3 to 6 p.m. making apple cider flavored mini donuts and apple cider on the spot. A dozen donuts are $9, 2 dozen are $17 and 3 dozen are $23; fresh pressed apple cider is $4. A portion of the sales will go to James Hart School.

Manga Club for Teens. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the FORT for teens who love manga. Registration is requested but not required.

Chasing Mother Nature. Nick from Storm Science will discuss storm chasing, forecasting severe weather and show videos of storm chasing in a program for adults from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.

Thursday, Sept. 4

Bugs Still Fly at The Rock Shop. The band will perform at 6 p.m. at 18109 Dixie Highway in Homewood.

Friday, Sept. 5

Pups at the Pad. From 5 to 7 p.m. dogs and their people can enjoy the cool water at the H-F Park District Splash Pad, Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. This off-leash event is the perfect opportunity for dogs to socialize, play, and beat the heat.

You Matter 2 Outdoor Movie Night. The first teen night of the new school year will be a showing of “Freaky Friday” from 7 to 10 p.m. at FCC Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor. Grab your blanket to sit on, bring your friends and enjoy free pizza, popcorn and beverages, plus fun games and a photo booth before the movie. Register by Tuesday, Sept. 2, to save your spot. Open to all 6th through 12th grade students.

Coco and Fancy at Flossmoor Station. The acoustic duo will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. at Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery, 1035 Sterling Ave.

Saturday, Sept. 6

Hidden Gem Half Marathon. The sixth annual race through Flossmoor’s neighborhoods starts at 7:30 a.m. in front of Infant Jesus of Prague School and is expected to end around 11:30 a.m. with the finish line on Sterling Avenue.

Kegs & Eggs. The Village of Flossmoor will host a post-Hidden Gem celebration for the second year in a row in the downtown area from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors will be available for people to buy food as early as 7 a.m. Flossmoor DJ Matt Kuhnen will provide musical accompaniment.

Free Yoga for Kids at DQ. Serendipity Yoga will provide a free session from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at Dairy Queen, 1700 Ridge Road in Homewood. Classes include stretching and strengthening poses, breathing techniques and guided relaxation designed specifically for kids to enjoy. There is no need to register in advance. Just show up at the Homewood Dairy Queen and meet on the lawn under the big tree on the north side of the parking lot. No mats are needed. All materials will be provided.

Branch Chipping. Homewood Public Works will accept branches up to six inches in diameter (no pine or other evergreen, no shrub trimmings, no leaves or bags or super wrapped bundles) at the Municipal Service Center, 17755 Ashland Ave., from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 708-206-3470.

Beyond Jazz Show Featuring Vashon Johnson. Jazz at noon at Beyond Borders Coffee Shop, 1036 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor. Vashon Johnson is a first-call electric bassist with experience in arena-pop, Broadway orchestras and exploratory jazz-fusion. His career includes touring and recording with icons like Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Wynton Marsalis, Seal, Ariana Grande, Boyz II Men and The Jacksons.

Readings from “Sitting Under the Tree: Poems Commemorating Juneteenth.” Sister Laila will be reading selections from her third book, “Sitting Under the Tree: Poems Commemorating Juneteenth” from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway.

Butterfield Creek at the Caboose. Americana music by the local band performing from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery’s caboose on the patio, 1035 Sterling Ave.

Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Martin Square on Martin Avenue between Chestnut and Ridge Roads in downtown Homewood. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, skincare and more. Food trucks will be on hand and ready-to-eat meals will be available.

STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 6 to Nov. 9

Youth Flag Football League. H-F Park District will host a flag football league for anyone from kindergarten through high school at Irwin Park, 1800 block of Ridge Road in Homewood. The season will include five weeks of regular-season games and weekly hour-long practices, followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament. Each player receives an NFL flag and jersey. Fee is $124 for park district residents, $149 for non-residents. Register here.

Monday, Sept. 8

Superintendent’s Search. Residents of District 153 are invited to a forum to offer input on the attributes you wish to see in the next superintendent. The 7 p.m. meeting will be in the cafetorium at James Hart School, 18220 Morgan Ave., Homewood.

Tuesday, Sept. 9

Forest Bathing Experience. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., Jeni Gabrenya, certified forest therapy guide, will lead a session of forest bathing, a practice of surrounding yourself with the forest to build connections with the more than human world. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese method of Shinrin Yoku, which translates to forest bath. The practice was popularized in Japan as an effort to counteract disconnection that resulted from the rise of large cities and increased use of technology. Interacting with nature during a forest therapy walk supports our mental health, helps to release stress and encourages the mind-body connection. The session is for anyone age 12 and up. Thursday, Sept. 11

Books Without Borders. The first session of the Books Without Borders community book club will meet from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at The Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway, to discuss “So You Want to Talk about Race” by Ijeoma Oluo.

Saturday, Sept. 13

Homewood Car Cruise. The Off the Grid Car Club & Dan’s Classics hosts its Homewood Car Cruise from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 18009 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. There is a $10 fee to benefit Anew domestic abuse treatment center.

Repair Cafe. Flossmoor will host at village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road, a free community event where neighbors come together from 10 a.m. to noon to breathe new life into broken items. The Chicago Southland Green Committee is organizing the opportunity to repair wobbly chairs, flickering lamps, torn clothing, tired plants or other items in need of repair. Homewood TreeShare Program. Homewood will offer residents a low-cost way to add beauty, shade and wildlife to your lawn with the 2025 TreeShare Program from 8 a.m. to noon in the village hall parking lot, 2024 Chestnut Road. Native trees include pagoda dogwood ($60), forest pansy redbud ($60), shumard oak ($70), cucumber melon ($30), autumn brilliance serviceberry ($70), flame thrower redbud ($60), ohio buckeye ($70). Community Shred/Electronics Recycling. State Rep. Will Davis will host a paper shredding, electronics recycling and prescription drug takeback event at his office, 1912 W. 174th Street in East Hazel Crest, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is for households only, not businesses.

Thursday, Sept. 25

Legislative Write-In. The League of Women Voters Homewood Flossmoor Area will host an opportunity from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for food, fellowship, fun, reuniting, recruiting and writing letters to legislators about important issues.
