The Homewood- Flossmoor Park District hosted an ice cream social on Sunday, Aug. 17, in Highlands Park in the Heather Hill neighborhood to celebrate the opening of the new pickleball and tennis courts.

The park was filled with residents and their children enjoying ice cream from the Dip n’ Double ice cream truck with the courts full of children learning pickleball and tennis from instructors.

The courts were a response to the park district’s selling previous tennis courts to the Village of Flossmoor for the current detention basin to help mitigate flooding in downtown Flossmoor and the Heather Hill neighborhood.

H-F Park District Director Doug Boehm said the project began two years ago with the basin project and the district making a commitment to rebuild the courts, he said. The current courts are less than half a mile from the previous courts.

“We met with neighbors two or three times, got a lot of input and were able to design the tennis and pickleball courts,” Boehm said. “This has been about 18 months of planning, and it’s come into fruition today.”
