District 153 summer projects are new flooring, roof

Two major summer projects are underway in District 153: Willow School is getting a new roof and the Sports Complex floor is being replaced.

The $2.44 million roof project is being handled by DCG Roofing. Work covers the roof and 59 drain replacements for the Homewood school that services prekindergarten through second grade students. The company is providing a 30-year roof warranty.

The district saved about 17.5% of the cost by working directly with the roofing company rather than hiring an architect. The district did the same thing in 2024 when the Churchill School roof was replaced.

To cover the cost of this work, the district sold $2.82 million in general obligation bonds. The district is also using a $50,000 Illinois State Board of Education grant awarded to help with school improvements.

The District 153 school board also approved a $435,229 contract with Krull Window Co. to replace the windows at Willow this summer.

The second project, the $259,630 replacement of the vinyl floor at the Sports Complex, is being shared with the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District.

The gym, an addition onto James Hart School dating to 2002, is used by students during the day and turned over to the park district for programs late afternoon and evening and on the weekends.

The floor will have markings for basketball, volleyball and badminton. The floor is laid but work crews are still working to complete the markings.

In June the vinyl flooring at the Sports Complex was ripped up and replaced. The project is a joint venture of Homewood School District 153 and the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District which share the facility. (Provided photo)
