Notices

Village Door Still Open. The Cancer Support Center announced in April that the Village Door store on Ridge Road in Homewood would close at the end of the year, but store manager Diane Matthews said the store and its volunteers are still welcoming donations of gently used household items and furniture. Smaller items can be dropped off at the shop anytime during shop hours. For donations of furniture items, send photos to [email protected] along with contact information to coordinate the intake.

Monday, May 18

Friends of HPL. The Friends of the Homewood Public Library will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at the library, 17917 Dixie Highway.

Hula Dancers. Learn about hula dancing as the Hula Chicago company performs from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. There will be some instruction and audience participation.

Meet a Viking. Eighth-graders who are attending Homewood-Flossmoor High School next school year can visit The FORT at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. to ask questions about what it will be like in high school. H-F students will be on hand to offer insight and pointers. Register here

Senior Bagels & Bingo. There will be small prizes for each game winner, bagels for all (or until supplies run out), and conversation with neighbors from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. The program is sponsored by an AgeOptions Senior grant and participation is limited to seniors only. Art in the Park. Youngsters can create art from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Goldberg Park, 3301 Flossmoor Road.

Makerspace Days. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., invites teens to visit The Attic from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to make earrings, sew a squishy or create something completely new in the Makerspace. There will be a focused activity for anyone looking for a little inspiration, but you can come up with your own project, too.

Crafts in a Jar. Visit the meeting room at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 5 to 6 p.m. to turn tiny jars into miniature masterpieces. Design habitats and snow globes inside small glass jars using a variety of craft supplies. Register here

Books Without Borders: Don’t Go. Co-author Maria Krysan will join the community book club to talk about “Don’t Go: Stories of Segregation and How to Disrupt It,” which she wrote with Tonika Lewis Johnson. The meeting will be at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

Evening Book Discussion: A Place For Us. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host in the Conference Room from 7 to 8 p.m. a discussion of “A Place for Us” by Fatima Farheen Mirza. Everyone is welcome.

Lassen’s Tuesday Trivia. Test your knowledge from 8 to 10 p.m. at 2131 W. 183rd St. Doors open at 7 p.m.

District 161 Special Education Services Meeting. If you are a parent of a private school or home-schooled student who has been or may be identified with a disability you are invited to attend a Zoom meeting to discuss Flossmoor School District 161’s plans for providing special education services to students with disabilities who attend private schools and home schools within the district for the 2026-2027 school year. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. The Zoom link can be found on the district website at www.sd161.org under the Student Support Services Department. Crafts at the Library: Card Making Class. Interested in creating your own personalized cards?  Sign up for a card-making class from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Participants will receive a kit with all materials required to make three cards. Bedtime Snack & Story. Meet in The Attic at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for a pajama story time. This event is for registrants age 6 and younger. Register here.

Writers Club. Gather in the meeting room at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be two writing prompts to help stretch those creative muscles.

Teen Movie Club: Revenge of the Sith. Teens are invited to The FORT in Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to watch a showing of “Revenge of the Sith” (PG-13). Register here.

Fiber Friends Drop-In. Knitters, crocheters, embroiderers and quilters are welcome to stop by the conference room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to share your projects with people of all skill levels. Bring your materials and group members can help you learn.

Crafty Tots. From 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. youngsters can finger-paint, doodle, and put together their own works of art at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. All supplies provided. Register here.

Walk Through Our Mission. You Matter 2 will host an immersive evening at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road, that introduces the organization’s work with youth through storytelling, creativity and connection. Guests will journey from 7 to 11 p.m. through interactive stations led by students, alumni and volunteers, experiencing firsthand how You Matter 2 supports youth from middle school through career readiness. The evening will conclude with a Spotlight Program featuring student stories, a live auction, and a collective paddle raise, which is a fundraising practice for attendees to raise their bidder paddles to commit to specific donation levels, to support  programs. Saturday, May 23

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. A 25-mile fitness bike ride. Everyone stays together. Leaves GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St., every Saturday (weather permitting) at 8 a.m. Returns before 10 a.m. Pace dictated by the riders who show up. Explore our local streets and trail system with Barb & Dan Lawler.

Off-Leash Ride. A nine-mile bike ride at about a 9-to-10 mph pace every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at 8:30 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ends back at the shop about 9:30 a.m. for donuts. Kid trailers welcome.

STEM Saturday. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host its free weekly science play time for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Play opportunities include Pixel Pegs, Nano, Early Math Counts Activities, Makerspace, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall and more.

Monday, May 25

Memorial Day in Homewood. The combined James Hart and Parker Junior High bands will perform at 10:15 a.m. at the intersection of Olive Road and Harwood Avenue. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Veterans Memorial. The Homewood-Flossmoor High School band will perform, there will be several speakers, wreath laying, a rifle salute and taps will be sounded.

Memorial Day in Flossmoor. Taps Across America will take place at 3 p.m. at the flag pole in front of Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.

Auditions for The Prom. The Drama Group will be hosting auditions from 6 to 10 p.m. at Milord Theatre, 330 West 202nd St. in Chicago Heights, for it’s summer musical, “The Prom.” This production is open to anyone 16 and older. Click here for audition details.

Thursday, May 28

Shopping for a Cause. Shoppers who make purchases at participating Homewood Business Association members’ stores from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. will be helping the Cancer Support Center in the process. Stores will donate 10% of sales back to the center to help it provide free programs and support services for those impacted by cancer in our community.

Friday, May 29

Saturday, May 30

Homewood Farmers Market. The outdoor market season will begin. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first 250 market visitors to pick up a free summer tote bag will receive a bag full of useful info from sponsors. Quantities are limited.

Tuesday, June 2

Pop Culture Dance. Spotlight Performance Academy will offer a class on dance combinations set to songs from theatre, TV, movies, TikTok and YouTube. Dance styles will vary between jazz, modern, hip hop and ballet. No dance experience is necessary. All classes will be held at the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway. Tuition is $80. Session 1 classes will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:15 p.m. through June 23. Session 2 classes will run July 7 through July 28.

Sunday, June 7

Purple Rain. Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Boulevard, Park Forest, will screen the classic film “Purple Rain.” Celebrate the birthday of Prince by experiencing this legendary movie on the big screen once again. Guests can also enter a raffle for a chance to win amazing prizes, including a rare 1984 Gold Plaque collectible. Tickets are just $5 and available now at Freedom Hall. Buy tickets here.

Monday, June 8

Hobo Jungle. The annual summer camp will have sessions from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. from June 8 through June 19 at Flossmoor Park. Kids will learn how to use basic carpentry tools while building full-size, themed structures. Safety is stressed and reinforced. Campers will spend part of their day in the construction area and the rest playing organized games. For kids ages 7 to 13. Fee is $159 for H-F Park District residents, $189 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Minecraft Engineering Using Lego Camp. Sessions for kids ages 5 to 7 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and for kids ages 7 to 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Bring your favorite Minecraft adventures to life with the camp’s Play-Well instructors. In a Minecraft world powered by LEGO® resources, campers will build shelters to keep out creepers, craft mystical items that only true masters can wield, and perfect our crossbow skills to stop the Wither from taking over. Art Camp. Bottle & Bottega Homewood will host kids camps from June 9 through Aug. 7. Sessions are held 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Each week brings a brand new theme, so there’s always something fresh and exciting to spark a child’s imagination. Wednesday, June 10

Community Band. A summer tradition returns to Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Pack a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the opening concert of the 61st season of the Homewood-Flossmoor Community Band from 7 to 8 p.m.

Friday, June 12

Pride Fest. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District in partnership with the villages of Flossmoor and Homewood will host the annual community-wide Pride celebration in Flossmoor Park starting at 5 p.m. The free party will include live music, food trucks, vendors and fun. Bel Canto Community Choir will perform, followed by Beyond The Blonde.

Wednesday, June 17

Petting Zoo. Little Starr Farm will bring animals to Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., giving kids a chance to see, pet and feed farm animals. Friday, June 19

Juneteenth Parade and Block Party. You Matter 2 will present a day of celebration, culture, and community at the fifth annual Juneteenth Parade and Block Party in Flossmoor. The day kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. featuring local groups, performers, and businesses, followed by a block party in the commuter lot at at 2616 Sterling Ave. filled with music, food, games and connection. 

Saturday, June 27

Dancing Away Domestic Violence. The annual fundraiser for Anew: Building Beyond Violence & Abuse, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of the Heights gym at St. Kieran Parish, 724 195th St., Chicago Heights. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and younger, kids 5 and younger are free. An event T-shirt is $12. All proceeds benefit Anew’s programs. Tickets can be purchased here.
