Flossmoor District 161 Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. in  Normandy Villa, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights. The agenda is available here. Following the audience comments portion of the agenda, the board will convene in closed session. There are no discussion or action items scheduled for this meeting.

Tuesday, March 17

Election Day. Voters can cast their ballot in this primary election from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. To verify your polling place location, visit the the Cook County Board of Elections website.

Homewood Lead Service Line Public Hearing. Village staff will deliver a brief presentation at 7 p.m. in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road, on the village’s loan application to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, which seeks funding for lead service line replacements. Meet the Candidates. Election Day is Tuesday. Anyone who hasn’t already voted early or by mail can get a look at candidates and issues at the Chronicle’s Meet the Candidates page. There, you will find video interviews, candidate forum videos, news stories and links to election guides.

Homewood Schools E-Learning Day March 17. Because the Cook County Board of Elections will use James Hart and Churchill Schools as polling places, Hart, Churchill and Willow Schools will have an e-learning day.

Community Clean-up Day Sign-up Deadline. The first community clean-up day coordinated by Flossmoor, Homewood and the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District on April 4 will have opportunities for businesses, organizations and families to pitch in and spruce up the area. Sign up here.  Registration closes on Thursday, March 19.

Homewood 4th of July Parade. The village is inviting local businesses and organizations to sign up for a spot in the annual parade. This year the event will be a special celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Pitch float ideas, dance teams, performance groups that celebrate community and the American spirit. Register your idea by June 20.

Valuable Voices. The teen group formerly Adolescent Activists will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. in The Fort at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Do you want your voice to be heard? Do you have thoughts and concerns about world issues? This teen meeting is a platform for an open-ended discussion about issues. Register here.

Tuesday, March 17

Senior Bagels & Bingo. Meet in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room in Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to enjoy bagels, bingo and good company. Sponsored by an AgeOptions Senior grant, so participation is limited to seniors only.

Rising Readers.
 Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host story time from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Rauch Reading Room for ages newborn to 6 years old with stories, songs, bubbles and more. Register here.

Makerspace Days. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., invites teens to visit The Attic from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to make earrings, sew a squishy or create something completely new in the Makerspace. There will be a focused activity for anyone looking for a little inspiration, but you can come up with your own project, too.

Bingo for Teens. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host bingo for teens in the FORT upstairs from 6 to 7 p.m. There will be prizes for winners.

Evening Book Discussion: Brooklyn. Join the discussion about “Brooklyn” by Coim Toibin from 7 to 8 p.m. in the conference room of Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Light refreshments served. Pre-registration is not required. All are welcome.

Audition for Cabaret. 
The Drama Group will hold its second and last audition from 7 to 9 p.m. for parts in its production of “Cabaret.” The session will be held at the Drama Group Studio, 330 W. 202nd St. in Chicago Heights. Computer Class for Adults: Introduction to Microsoft Word. Adults are invited to the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon for a class that introduces the student to the basics of using Word to draft documents. Floss-Flow Teen Poetry Showcase. Flossmoor Art Council will host an evening of talented teen voices from local high schools from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Conservatory Vintage & Vinyl, 1042 Sterling Ave., Flossmoor. Improv Class for Adults. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host from 10 to 11 a.m. an improv workshop for beginners of all abilities, including those who are neurodiverse, seniors or those who like to help others learn. Presented in partnership with Sertoma Star Services.

Prairie Jubilee. To kick off the spring season, volunteers at Gensburg Markham Prairie invite the public to join a volunteer-led effort to restore this historic prairie site from 9 a.m. to noon. The project will involve cutting back woody brush with hand-tools. No experience is necessary, and all supplies and tools will be provided. There will be snacks and opportunity to meet new people. Wear outdoorsy clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Parking at 15900 California Ave. in Markham.

Weekend Documentary Film: Jane’s Journey. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a showing of “Jane’s Journey” from 10 a.m. to noon in the meeting room.

Advanced Computer Class for Adults: PowerPoint Fundamentals. Adults can learn hands-on practice with creating, formatting and running a PowerPoint slide show. The class will meet from 10 a.m. to noon in Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. The library provides students with laptops for this class. Please do not bring your own device. Individualized instruction may not be possible. This class is facilitated by Dr. Kristine Condon, a Microsoft Certified Educator. Big Screen Rewatch: Jurassic World. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a showing of “Jurassic World” from 2 to 4 p.m. in the meeting room.

DIY Fairy Garden. Tweens and teens are invited to Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 3 to 4 p.m. to learn how to create their own fairy garden experience. When the magic is complete, each participant carries home a pocket-sized fairy realm. Register here.

Spring ICE Breaker. The Rock Shop will host its second night of resistance at 7 p.m. in the FCC Community House, 847 Hutchison Road, Flossmoor. Doors open at 6 p.m. Musicians, poets, jewelers, artists and artisans showcase the art of resistance. Suggested $5 donation will benefit the South Suburban Housing Center. This is a BYO event.

Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s Rising Stars Concert: H-F student musicians Annie Ford and Sophia McManus join other young musicians at the 4 p.m. concert at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Rd. Admission is $20.

Around the World storytelling with Chris Fascione. Multicultural stories from many different countries, continents, and cultures come to life as Chris Fascione becomes colorful characters from literary folktales. Green Drinks: Birding. Nick Paarlberg from Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland will be the presenter at the Chicago Southland Green Drinks meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery, 1035 Sterling Ave. Also, Sheetal Khedkar Roa, chief health and engagement officer at Nordson Green Earth, will introduce the Markham Public Library Birdwatching Community Science Project. Limit 50 people. Organizers recommend bringing cash to make it easier for the group to pay for food and drinks.

Friday, March 27

Flashlight Egg Hunt. The annual flashlight egg hunt will be hosted at Irons Oaks, 20000 Western Ave., from 7 to 7:45 p.m. A non-paying adult must accompany child. For ages 3 to 10. Fee is $12 for H-F Park District residents, $15 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Saturday, March 28

Lucky Egg Hunt. The annual egg gathering event for kids will start at 10 a.m. in Apollo Park. A few lucky eggs will include an extra prize. The bunny will be available for photos after the hunt. For Homewood and Flossmoor kids age 10 and under only.

Lucky Dog Egg Hunt. It’s local dogs’ turn to gather eggs at 11 a.m. in Apollo Park. Humans can dash around the park with their dogs to collect treat-filled eggs. Families and all friendly dogs are welcome at this free, on-leash event. Dog owners under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings. Action for a Better Tomorrow South Suburbs will host a non-violent rally from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial on Harwood Avenue in Homewood to protest Trump administration policies. Live music and speakers.

Monday, March 30, through Friday, April 3

Spring Break Camps. Camp will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. The H-F Park District will offer structured activities, arts and crafts, and recreational games each day. Fee is $42 for district residents, $52 for non-residents. There will also be an After Camp session from 3 to 6 p.m. each day. Saturday, April 4

H-F Community Cleanup Day. The H-F Park District and the villages of Homewood and Flossmoor are collaborating on one big communitywide clean-up day from 8 a.m. to noon. The event will begin with breakfast at Wiley’s Grill, 800 Kedzie Ave., then individuals and groups will fan out to tidy up. Sign up here.

Chicago Southland International Film Festival. Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park, will host the eighth annual Chicago Southland International Film Festival in the amphitheater. Bessie Coleman Centennial Aviation Film Festival. The aviation-themed film festival will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bult Field, 28261 S. Kedzie Ave., Monee. Walk Through Our Mission. You Matter 2 will host an immersive evening at Flossmoor Community Church, that introduces the organization’s work with youth through storytelling, creativity and connection. Guests will journey through interactive stations led by students, alumni and volunteers, experiencing firsthand how You Matter 2 supports youth from middle school through career readiness. The evening will conclude with a Spotlight Program featuring student stories, a live auction, and a collective paddle raise, which is a fundraising practice that attendees to raise their bidder paddles to commit to specific donation levels, to support our programs.
