Highlights:

  • Consider an agreement with the U.S. Department of the Army as required to receive a grant to fund 75% of Phase 4 in the flooding relief project. Phase 4 involves installing a new drainage line along Sterling Avenue that will connect with the line on Lawrence Crescent that empties into the retention basin in Heather Hill neighborhood.
  • Consider accepting the fiscal year 2024-2025 audit.
  • Discuss financial projections for fiscal years 2026-2031.

Flossmoor Green Commission will meet 6:30 p.m. at village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.

Flossmoor Public Art Commission Installation. Supporters of public art help support the Flossmoor Public Art Commission by purchasing commemorative bricks. The village is preparing to place its next order of bricks for the downtown traffic circle and plans to install them by the end of November. Place a brick order here. Orders for the November installation are due by Thursday, Oct. 30. 

Flossmoor Streetscape Update. Last week, D Construction installed traffic signs and stamped crosswalks. This week, workers are expected to continue pavement marking, which will require temporary parking restrictions throughout the area. Benches, bike racks and trash receptacles will be installed. Officials urge visitors to respect flaggers, barrels and cones in the area. 

Metra Schedule Change. On Saturday, Oct. 25, trains will operate on a Sunday schedule due to construction work associated with the South Shore Line’s expansion plans. Please allow additional travel time.

Monday, Oct. 20

Friends of the Library Halloween Sale. The Friends of Homewood Public Library will have a special Halloween book sale on new arrivals at the library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 9 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Movie Night. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a showing of “Practical Magic” (rated PG-13) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Haunted Halloween Heist. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room from 6 to 8 p.m. a roleplay mystery party where participants can dress up like monsters and work together, solving clues to track down a Halloween candy thief. Each participant will receive a character role, and it is their job to ask questions of the other suspects. Can you find the candy thief? Food will be provided. This event is for anyone age 10 to 18. Register here.

Tuesday, Oct. 21

Art in the Park. Kids can create an outdoor-themed art project from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Leavitt Park, 1010 Leavitt Ave. Sponsored by Flossmoor Public Library.

Wednesday, Oct. 22

Senior Medicare Fraud Patrol. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host  Marina Silva of Age Options’ Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol from 1 to 2 p.m. to help seniors learn more about the Senior Medicare Patrol Program and how they can protect, detect and report Medicare fraud. Handouts and take-away information will be available to all participants.

Morbid History. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. presented by award-winning filmmaker Lorrisa Julianus. From grand corpse larceny in medieval Venice to the iron coffins popping up in Lincoln Park, this light-hearted presentation takes you around the world with spine-tingling true tales you never learned in history class. Ideal for teens, adults, and seniors.

Domestic Violence 101. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. a training session to learn about the services and programs offered by Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse. This session will cover key topics including common myths and facts about domestic violence, types of abuse, warning signs and the cycle of violence.

The session will cover barriers that prevent individuals from leaving abusive relationships, the impact of abuse on children, and other information to better understand and support survivors.

Thursday, Oct. 23

Spooky Creations – Pumpkin Carving & Painting. You Matter 2 will host a pumpkin decorating event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in grades 6 through 12 at Flossmoor Community Church. Create your own spooky (or silly) pumpkin. Supplies provided. Register here

Garden Club. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host the monthly meeting of the Garden Club from 7 to 8 p.m. Open to all gardening enthusiasts from beginners to Master Gardeners.

Friday, Oct. 24

Flashlight Pumpkin Hunt. Sign up for 6, 6:30, or 7 p.m. time slots to hunt pumpkins in the Irons Oaks woodland pumpkin patch. There will be fun and games along the trail. Do a spooky craft and enjoy a sweet treat. Participants must be accompanied by a non-paying adult. Each child needs to register for the program. Bring your flashlight. Costumes are optional but encouraged. For ages 3 to 12. Fee is $12 for H-F Park District residents, $15 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Chastity Brown at Thornton Distillery. Trail Mix Roots Music Series will feature a performance by Chastity Brown starting at 7 p.m. in Cooper’s Hall at Thornton Distilling, 400 E. Margaret St. in Thornton. Opening artist will be singer songwriter, cello and guitar player Adela. Order tickets here.

Gaming Night Special. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a gaming event for teens from 6 to 8 p.m. in The Fort upstairs. Gaming Night is getting spooky this month with Haunted Hide-N-Seek, plus pizza and a raffle. Register here.

Saturday, Oct. 25

Trick or Treat Trail. H-F Park District will host the annual trick or treat event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. Registration is free for park district residents, $2 for non-residents. Morning spots are full. There are still spots available from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m.

Bark-Or-Treat. Downtown Flossmoor businesses will be hosting a spooky day for pets. Check in for the pet costume contest at 3 p.m. on the Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery caboose deck, 1035 Sterling Ave. At 4 p.m. pets and their humans will participate in a trick-or-treat parade through downtown Flossmoor. At 4:15 p.m., DJ Phil Lee will preside over the costume contest at Flossmoor Station. There will be treats, prizes and music. Register here.

Family Spooky Skate. H-F Park District will host a spooky skate session from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the H-F Ice Arena, 777 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. Admission is $7, skate rental is $5. Half-price admission for those in costume. Best costume wins a prize.

Beethoven Symphony No. 5 and Violin Concerto. The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s season opening concert will feature two Beethoven works. The concert will be at Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College, 6601 West College Drive in Palos Heights. VanderCook College of Music String Ensemble, led by Yvonne Davila-Cortez, will perform in the Grand Lobby from 4:45 pm to 5:15 pm. IPO will perform at 5:30 p.m. Purchase tickets here.

STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Night of the Living B-Rated Horror Film. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host showings of some bad horror movies from 6 to 8 p.m. Feel free to bring blankets and pillows. Snacks and drinks will be provided. 

Tuesday, Oct. 28

Family Pumpkin Carving & Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee. Carve pumpkins from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Irwin Community Center band shell, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Each registered participant gets one pumpkin, all carving and decorating materials, and a photo-op with the collective pumpkins. Take your pumpkin home after the event. Fee is $10 for H-F Park District residents, $15 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Thursday, Oct. 30

Resurrection Mary. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host an opportunity to learn about Chicago’s most beloved spirit from 7 to 8 p.m. Who is or was “Resurrection Mary” and what makes the Chicago version of this “Vanishing Hitchhiker” legend so special? Where did the story start? What are the facts? Are people still seeing Mary’s ghost today?

Thornton Township Trunk or Treat. Local organizations are invited to decorate a trunk, wear costumes and help create a fun event for area kids. The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, at Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St., South Holland. Friday, Oct. 31

Village of Homewood Trick or Treat. Homewood staff will be handing out full-sized candy bars to trick-or-treaters who stop by village hall, the police department, the fire department or the Homewood Science Center from 3 to 5 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 1

Pumpkin Smash. Keep your jack o’ lanterns out of the landfill by bringing them to the annual pumpkin smash event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Coyote Run Golf Course, 800 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor.

Halloween Bash. Not My Dad will perform starting at 7 p.m. at Tuscan Gardens, 601 W. Holbrook Road in Glenwood. Costumes encouraged but not required. Contest for best outfit.

Tuesday, Nov. 11

Books Without Borders. The next book discussion will take place from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at Beyond Borders Café, 1036 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor. The book is “Stamped – Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. It will be available at the Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway in Homewood, and at www.bookshop.org. Everyone is welcome.
