Flossmoor Streetscape Update. Pavement marking will begin this week, which will mean temporary parking restrictions downtown. Last week, crews applied primer to the many street light poles in preparation for painting, and that project will continue this week. Soil will be added to the planter beds.

Monday, Oct. 6

Card Gamers Unite. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host card games in the FORT from 4 to 5 p.m. for anyone going into 7th through 12th grades. Register here.

Tuesday, Oct. 7

Storytime in the Park. Join Flossmoor Library’s Miss Jenny for some outdoor stories from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Leavitt Park, 1010 Leavitt Ave. Bring your own blankets or chairs. Storytime will be moved to the library in the event of bad weather. Register here.

Art in the Park. 
An afternoon of free outdoor-themed art for youngsters from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Goldberg Park, 3301 Flossmoor Road.

Wizard of Oz Auditions. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District’s Children’s Theater program will hold auditions at 6 p.m. at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Participants will audition to spend four weeks rehearsing to perform the Wizard of Oz. The performance will take place at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, at Irwin Community Center. Casting is for kids aged 8 to 12. Fee is $120 for park district residents, $145 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Trivia. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host trivia for adults and seniors from 7 to 8 p.m. Time to stretch those brains, pub quiz style. Come with a team or form one here. Prizes awarded.

Wednesday, Oct. 8

Manga Club for Teens. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the FORT for teens who love manga.

James Madison at HPL. Terry Lynch will portray founding father James Madison at the Homewood Historical Society meeting. Business meeting will start at 6 p.m. Presentation will be at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 9

Food for Thought: H-F Family Fall Fest. Homewood-Flossmoor High School will host a family fun fest from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the school, 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. The event promises to be “an evening of connection and conversation,” including parent learning sessions. It will also give participants a chance to walk through the new science building. Food trucks will be on campus with specialty foods for purchase. A free treat will be available for all who register at https://bit.ly/HFFoodforThought.

Friday, Oct. 10

Senior Social Hour. Stop by Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 1 to 2 p.m. for an hour of pleasant conversation and light refreshments.

Murder Mystery Night: The Case of the Missing Manuscript. Beyond the Book, 18063 Dixie Highway, will host from 3 to 5 p.m. a mystery event. Join us for an evening of literary intrigue where every guest becomes a detective, every corner holds a clue, and the truth is hiding between the lines.

Saturday, Oct. 11

Homewood Fall Fest & Chili Cook-off. The annual autumn festival will return from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, on Martin Avenue in downtown Homewood. The festival will feature food, live music and activities for kids, including face-painting, crafts and a rock-climbing wall. The event features the annual Chili Cook-Off with judging will take place at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., tasting will open to the public for a $5 donation. Proceeds will go to Spotlight Performance Academy.

Frank Lloyd Wright House Tour. The Foundation for the Preservation of Flossmoor History is sponsoring tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. of the recently restored Frederick D. Nichols house at 1136 Brassie Ave. The home was designed by iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright and was built in 1906. Tickets may be obtained online or at the door for a $30 per person donation to the foundation. Funds are being raised to restore the foundation’s home, the Wagner Building at 2709 Flossmoor Road.

Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The last market of the season will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Martin Square on Martin Avenue between Chestnut and Ridge Roads in downtown Homewood. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, skincare and more. Food trucks will be on hand and ready-to-eat meals will be available.

STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Teen Night: Who-Dun-It Game. Beyond the Book, 18063 Dixie Highway, will host from 3 to 5 p.m. a mystery event for teens. Everyone is gathered for game night when disaster strikes — an unpublished manuscript from a famous local author has gone missing. The crowd must work together to solve the mystery: Who took the manuscript, and why?

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Sunday, Oct. 12

Pink-a-Boo Walk of Hope. Cancer Support Center’s annual fundraiser will begin with warm up and entertainment at 8:45 a.m. in the Irwin Park bandshell. Walkers will step off at 9 a.m. Supporters can choose from two routes, a 1 mile or 5K. Both routes will take walkers through downtown Homewood. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their pink attire or Halloween costumes. Registrations are being accepted at cancersupportcenter.org. Registration fee is $35 for adults and $15 for youth. Registration will also be accepted the day of the walk.

Cancer Awareness Month. Beyond the Book, 18063 Dixie Highway, will host from 1 to 2 p.m. a guest speaker who will focus on resilience, wellness and preventive care as well as exploring the power of stories, knowledge and community in supporting health and hope.

Tuesday, Oct. 14

Community Bonfire. From 6 to 8 p.m. the H-F Park District will host marshmallow roasting  and meeting neighbors at Cedar Park, 1811 Cedar Road in Homewood. The park district will provide the standard s’more materials, but please feel welcome to bring any other ingredients you’d like to add.

Thursday, Oct. 16

Witches’ Night Out. Homewood Business Association will host its annual Halloween event in downtown Homewood from 5 to 8 p.m. Shoppers are encouraged to don their best witch costume. The organization will hand out 100 bag-totes filled with promotional items from member businesses.

Sunday, Oct. 19

Walk Walton. Homewood Science Center’s annual outdoor fest will take place at the Izaak Walton Preserve in Homewood, 1100 Ridge Road, rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be guided nature activities, a hands-on conservation project led by HSC’s Conservation Ecology Interns, STEM activities inside the preserve’s Black Bear Lodge, the Illinois Natural History Survey’s Traveling Exhibit, an Insect Petting Zoo, spooky slimey science and the pumpkin patch and Jack-O-Lantern decorating table. Tickets are available at homewoodsciencecenter.org. Tickets are $5. The fee includes a backpack, pumpkin and decorating kit. Senior citizens are welcome to join the fun for free, but are asked to reserve a ticket to help staff make accurate plans for the event.

Friday, Oct. 24

Flashlight Pumpkin Hunt. Sign up for 6, 6:30, or 7 p.m. time slots to hunt pumpkins in the Irons Oaks woodland pumpkin patch. There will be fun and games along the trail. Do a spooky craft and enjoy a sweet treat. Participants must be accompanied by a non-paying adult. Each child needs to register for the program. Bring your flashlight. Costumes are optional but encouraged. For ages 3 to 12. Fee is $12 for H-F Park District residents, $15 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Tuesday, Nov. 11

Books Without Borders. The next book discussion will take place from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at Beyond Borders Café, 1036 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor. The book is “Stamped – Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. It will be available at the Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway in Homewood, and at www.bookshop.org. Everyone is welcome.
