Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in the superintendent’s board room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.

Fitness Center Closure. The Fitness Center at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 2, and Friday, Oct. 3 for the installation of new fitness equipment. The rest of the building will remain open during this time. The Fitness Center will re-open on Saturday, Oct. 4. 

Flossmoor Streetscape Update. Last week, D Construction completed the asphalt paving on the downtown streets. Crews will focus this week on landscaping and painting street light poles.

Monday, Sept. 29

Prime Time Fitness with Gigi. Low-impact aerobics for beginners or mature exercisers starts at 10:30 a.m. at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood.

Tuesday, Sept. 30

Storytime in the Park. Join Flossmoor Library’s Miss Jenny for some outdoor stories from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Leavitt Park, 1010 Leavitt Ave. Bring your own blankets or chairs. Storytime will be moved to the library in the event of bad weather.

The Service Hour. An opportunity from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for teens to help out in your community. Hosted by Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Registration required.

Wednesday, Oct. 1

Aqua Zumba with Gigi. This class is a low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. starting at 9:30 a.m. Fee is $10 for club members, $20 for guests.

Manga Club for Teens. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the FORT for teens who love manga.

Friday, Oct. 3

Beyond the Book Grand Opening. From 1 to 5 p.m. Homewood’s new book store, Beyond the Book: A Literary Experience, will hold its opening celebration at 18063 Dixie Highway.

Keeping Dreams Alive Sneaker Ball. Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse will celebrate the organization’s 45th anniversary at its annual gala, an evening of dinner, dancing, silent auction, raffle and an awards ceremony honoring those who continue to bring awareness to domestic violence. The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at Georgios Banquets, 8800 W. 159th St. in Orland Park. Tickets are $150 per person. Register by Sept. 26.

The Drama Group presents: “POTUS: Or Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive,” a comedy set in the White House,  at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4, and repeated aty 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9, 10 and 11. Afternoon performances are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, and Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12. Tickets are $25 for adults; $23 for seniors and military; $19 for students, through dg.booktix.com. Saturday, Oct. 4

Grandpa’s Garage Sale. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will host a community garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lions Club Pool, 1041 Ridge Road in Homewood. Shop dozens of community booths filled with hidden gems, unique treasures and great deals.

Homewood Fire Department Open House. HFD will host its annual open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station, 17950 Dixie Highway. The University of Chicago medical helicopter is scheduled to be at this year’s event. Firefighters will again demonstrate the power of home sprinklers to extinguish a fire with minimal damage to a home. Cook County emotional support dogs will be visiting. Representatives from Homewood Veterinary Care will be with us to talk about pet care and pet emergencies. Teachers and homeschoolers might be interested in a special feature this year. The department  will be giving away fire safety education teaching materials from years past. 

Hidden Treasures. The Flossmoor Art Council will host a special appraisal event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the FCC Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor. Attendees will receive a professional, verbal evaluation of their items from recognized global fine art expert in appraisals. Attendees will be able to select from one of four one-hour time slots — 11 a.m. to noon, noon to 1 p.m., 1 to 2 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. — to schedule their verbal appraisal. Each session is priced at $30 and participants are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time for check-in. Register here.

OAKtoberfest. Flossmoor’s autumn festival will take place in two stages. Village arborist Dave Becker will lead an educational tree walk at 10 a.m. beginning at Brassie Avenue and Flossmoor Road. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be interactive workshops and demonstrations focused on sustainable living, organic gardening and native plantings in Flossmoor Park. There will be nature-themed crafts just for kids plus rock climbing, a bubble performer and facepainting. The second stage from 4 to 9 p.m. will be OAKtoberfest Music Festival in the south commuter lot. Music by DJ Emilio will be followed by live performances by ReTurn2Soul and Chicago-based Ring of Music Band & Orchestra.

Fall Sculpture Tour. The Flossmoor Public Art Commission will host a tour from 1 to 2 p.m. of Flossmoor’s sculpture collection. Meet at the trio of colorful sculptures by William O’Brien in Flossmoor Park at the corner of Brassie Avenue and Flossmoor Road. The tour will go through downtown Flossmoor and end at Leavitt Park.

Building Modern South Suburban Communities: The Work of McPherson, Swing & Associates. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host from 3 to 4 p.m. a presentation by Marcy Dinius, professor at DePaul University, on influential mid-century modern architect John McPherson, whose firm designed numerous south suburban commercial and residential buildings, including in Homewood and Flossmoor. This event is co-sponsored by the Southland Collective of Mid-Century Modern. Registration is not required.

Van Sipma Jewelers Anniversary Jewelry Event. Van Sipma Jewelers is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a vintage and estate jewelry event opening on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and resuming Oct. 7 through 11. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The store is at 2011 Ridge Road in downtown Homewood.

Learn to Curl. Today and Oct. 11 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. H-F Park District will host curling lessons at the H-F Ice Arena for beginners and those looking to refine their skills. This program will introduce participants to the foundational rules, techniques and gameplay of curling in a supportive and fun environment for ages 15 and up. Fee is $80. Click here to register.

Tuesday, Oct. 7

Wizard of Oz Auditions. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District’s Children’s Theater program will hold auditions at 6 p.m. at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Participants will audition to spend four weeks rehearsing to perform the Wizard of Oz. The performance will take place at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, at Irwin Community Center. Casting is for kids aged 8 to 12. Fee is $120 for park district residents, $145 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Thursday, Oct. 9

Food for Thought: H-F Family Fall Fest. Homewood-Flossmoor High School will host a family fun fest from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the school, 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. The event promises to be “an evening of connection and conversation,” including parent learning sessions. It will also give participants a chance to walk through the new science building. Food trucks will be on campus with specialty foods for purchase. A free treat will be available for all who register at https://bit.ly/HFFoodforThought.

Saturday, Oct. 11

Homewood Fall Fest & Chili Cook-off. The annual autumn festival will return from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, on Martin Avenue in downtown Homewood. The festival will feature food, live music and activities for kids, including face-painting, crafts and a rock-climbing wall. The event features the annual Chili Cook-Off. Judging will take place at 2 p.m., and at 3 p.m. tasting will open to the public for a $5 donation. Proceeds will go to Spotlight Performance Academy.

Frank Lloyd Wright House Tour. The Foundation for the Preservation of Flossmoor History is sponsoring tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. of the recently restored Frederick D. Nichols house at 1136 Brassie Ave. The home was designed by iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright and was built in 1906. Tickets may be obtained online or at the door for a $30 per person donation to the foundation. Funds are being raised to restore the foundation’s home, the Wagner Building at 2709 Flossmoor Road.
