According to reports, several shell casings were found near the location. The individual or individuals responsible fled the scene before police arrived. Fortunately, no one was struck or injured.

“A bullet struck my house while my husband and daughter were in the building,” Crump said, adding, “This is the third official shooting in my neighborhood since Easter.”

She said that really there were four incidents, but that one of them didn’t count as official since there were no shell casings found.

“This is on Olive Road, less than two blocks from James Hart Middle School. Children use that street to walk to school,” Crump said.

Crump stated that a neighborhood watch group has been formed, and she would like a dedicated police officer to attend their meetings. She also inquired if there’s information that can be released regarding if the casings came from the same gun as past incidents to know if they are dealing with the same perpetrator. She also urged for a focus on security cameras by police as well.

Homewood resident Maggie Gosselin also addressed the board at the meeting along with her two sons and one of their friends. She said they were all outside when the shooting occurred.

“I’m afraid for my children,” Gosselin said, adding, “What are you going to do to make it safe? This is ‘Home Sweet Homewood’, and I’m afraid that my children are going to get shot and killed.”

Other residents echoed the need for action, and stated that they are ready and willing to work with the police to resolve this issue.

“I have nothing but confidence in Chief (Denise) McGrath and her staff. She will address this, as she’s always done,” Trustee Patrick Siemsen said, adding, “Her staff and her detectives are top-notch. Rest assured, she will get to the bottom of this.”

“This is Homewood. We’re not going to tolerate things like this. Whatever the police need, you ask for it, you got it,” Mayor Rich Hofeld said.

This drive-by shooting is under investigation by Homewood police detectives. Anyone who may have information about this incident can contact the Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 708-206-3420.
