Hot Topics Survey. 
Today is the last day to have a say in the Homewood Hot Topics Survey. Village officials are gauging interest residents have in participating in opportunities to connect directly with village staff to discuss local issues in an informal format.

Cop on a Rooftop. Flossmoor police officers will perch on the roof at Dunkin Donuts, 3608 Vollmer Road, from 5 a.m. until noon to help raise funds for Special Olympics Illinois’ year-round programming. Donations can also be made online. Mention “Flossmoor Police Department” when donating. Homewood officers will be posted on the roof at Dunkin, 17579 Halsted St. from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be raffles for two barbecue grills.

Silent Library. The goal will be to complete wacky, ridiculous challenges while staying completely silent. Hosted at 3:30 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library. Registration is required.

Penelope the Pink-Nosed Puffin. Heather Hill School will present a musical, “Penelope the Pink-Nosed Puffin,” at 6 p.m. in Parker Junior High, 2810 School St. in Flossmoor. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students.

Boots on the Ground Property Tax Exempt Community Affair. Cook County 5th District Commissioner Kisha McCaskill is sponsoring an event from 6 to 8 p.m. at Life Church, 925 McArthur Drive in Chicago Heights, to help people navigate property taxes and discover exemptions. 

Saturday, May 17

Homewood Public Works Open House. If you think learning about street resurfacing and water lines sounds boring, you’ve never seen kids delight from a ride in a bucket lift or getting to sit at the controls of an excavator and pretend to dig a trench. Kids love big machines, and public works has plenty of those. The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at 17755 Ashland Ave.

STEM Saturday. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host its free weekly science play time for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Play opportunities include Pixel Pegs, Nano, Early Math Counts Activities, Makerspace, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall and more.

Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby. A Premier League bout between the Retro Rumblers and the Horrific Haunters will start at 8 p.m. in the Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $15 online, $20 at the door. Trackside tickets are $20 and front row is $25. Accessible seating is available at no extra charge.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Recycle Event and Resource Fair. Cook County 5th District Commissioner Kisha McCaskill is co-sponsoring the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Transformation Community United Methodist Church, 15446 Lexington in Harvey.
