Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2025, at Normandy Villa, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights. The agenda is available here. The meeting livestream will be available here.
Highlights: After considering the consent agenda and several action items, the board plans to accept the April 1 election results. Newly elected or reelected members Tre Childress, Ashly Giddens, Carolyn Griggs and Cameron Nelson will be sworn in and new officers elected.
Homewood School District 153 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, in the James Hart School media center, 18220 Morgan St. The agenda for the organizational meeting is available here. The regular meeting agenda is available here.
Highlights: In the organizational meeting, after a presentation honoring Willow School Special Olympics competitors, newly elected or reelected board members Broderick Booth, Becky Popelka and Christine Scully will be sworn in and new officers elected. The board will honor member Shelly Marks who steps off the board after 33 years of service. The new board will convene the regular meeting at about 7:15 p.m.

Highlights:
- Newly elected and reelected board members Gary Daggett, Kevin Dorsey, Michelle Nelson and Carolyn Rodgers will take the oath of office.
- Consider renewing a contract with Smith Garson for federal lobbyist services, specifically to help the village obtain federal grants.
- Consider extending the contract with RetailCoach, a consulting firm that helps the village market itself and recruit new retail businesses.
Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.
Highlights: The board will consider accepting the results of the April 1 election. Newly elected board members Adriana Leonard, Camille O’Quin and Tamekia Smith will take the oath of office.
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners will hold a committee meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the Goldberg Administration Center, 3301 Flossmoor Road. The agenda will be available here when posted.
Flossmoor Viaduct Drainage Project Open House. The village will host an open house Thursday, May 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., to provide information to residents about Phase 3 of the flood relief project. A new drainage line will be installed along Lawrence Crescent from Heather Hill detention basin to Maryland Avenue. Construction is scheduled to begin June 2.
Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. The agenda is available here.
Highlight: The commission will consider a special use permit for a carry-out juice and smoothie bar at 18035 Dixie Highway.

Monday, May 5
Live Free 999 Mental Health Community Event. Homewood and Flossmoor families are invited to attend the panel discussion from 7 to 8 p.m., in the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Performing Arts Center Blackbox Theater, 999 Kedzie Ave. Guests should enter through Door 9. Teen Leadership Council. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a meeting of its Teen Leadership Council from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. in The Fort on the second level.
Tuesday, May 6
The Service Hour. An opportunity for anyone age 10 to 18 to help out in the community. Meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in The Attic at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave.
Open Access Queen of Hearts Raffle. The first drawing will be held at 7 p.m. at The Ridgewood. Tickets are available online until 2 p.m. and at The Ridgewood until 10 minutes before the drawing. Proceeds will benefit Open Access, which provides food, clothing and hygiene products to people in need.
Auditions for Matilda. The Drama Group, 330 W. 202nd St., Chicago Heights, will hold auditions from 6 to 9:30 p.m. for its production of “Matilda.” More information here and here.
Meet and Greet with Freedom LeMoi. Blue Pearl Candles, 2050 Ridge Road, will host an opportunity to meet Freedom “Free” LeMoi, who was featured on the hit show Wear Whatever the F You Want to Wear. There will be a viewing of the episode, cosmetics popup and light refreshments.
Wednesday, May 7
Glow in the Dark Sip & Paint. Anyone aged 11 to 13 is invited to enjoy glow-in-the-dark painting from 6 to 7 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave.
Serena Hills Gifted Art Exhibition. Art will be displayed from 6 to 8 p.m. at the District 161 administrative office, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights.
H-F Vikings Spring Band Concert. The concert will start at 7 p.m. at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, 999 Kedzie Ave., featuring Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band.
Thursday, May 8
Spring Planting Day. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, needs volunteers for spring planting day at the library from 3 to 5:30 p.m. To sign up, email Colleen Waltman at [email protected] with “Spring Planting Volunteer” in the subject line.
Vikings Challenge: Parker vs. Hart. Come out at 4:15 p.m. to Parker Junior High, 2810 School St., and see members of the H-F Travel Vikings 14U soccer team take each other on. Wear maroon and gold if you’re on #TeamHart or blue and gold if you’re on #TeamParker.
Rescheduled Serena Hills Picnic & Fun Fair. From 5 to 7 p.m. the Serena Hills Leadership Club will host a family event at 255 Pleasant Drive, Chicago Heights. Bring a picnic dinner for you and your family for an evening full of games, activities and community fun.
Teen Movie Club. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will screen “Secretariat” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for anyone in seventh through 12th grade. Pizza will be served. Click here to register.
Thursday Night Bouldering. Climb On Rock Gym, 18120 Harwood Ave., will host competition for all climbers from 6 to 10 p.m. It’s about challenging yourself, making new friends, and cheering each other on in a supportive, high-energy environment.

Senior Social Hour. An hour of pleasant conversation and light refreshments from 1 to 2 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.
H-F Film Fest. Students in the film program at Homewood-Flossmoor High School will present their work in the first H-F Film Festival set for 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, in the cafeteria in the South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. The event is free.
Saturday, May 10
Metra Service Change. On Saturday and Sunday, Metra Electric Line trains will terminate and originate at the 18th Street Station. A Sunday schedule will be in effect both days. There will be no train service to Museum Campus or Van Buren stations. Riders with mobility needs who wish to reach Millennium Station will need to transfer to a bus at McCormick Place. Anyone else who wants to reach Millennium will transfer to a shuttle bus at 18th Street.
Fairy Gardens. Kids can bring a grown-up and together create a fairy garden from 10:30 a.m. to noon. All supplies will be provided. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.
STEM Saturday. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host its free weekly science play time for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Play opportunities include Pixel Pegs, Nano, Early Math Counts Activities, Makerspace, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall and more.
Chicken Class. This class is designed for anyone who is considering getting chickens, as well as for those who already have their own birds. Learn how to find local laws, choose and raise chicks and care for adult birds. Hosted from 1 to 3 p.m. by Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.
Sock Puppet Memorial and Replacement Ceremony. Friday, May 9, is National Lost Sock Memorial Day. On that day, we mourn all of the socks that we have lost the pairs to. Find a sock that you have lost the pair to on Friday, and mourn your lost pair. On Saturday, come to Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and use white socks to create a replacement sock.
Reimagining Cabaret. Lynn Colbert-Jones will present Reimagining Cabaret: The Genres Explored at 7:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Blvd. in Park Forest. Experience a concert that unites and uplifts. Tickets available here.
Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.
Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.
Weinermobile at Walt’s. The Oscar Meyer Weinermobile will be at Walt’s Food Center, 2345 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thursday, May 15
Cone with a Cop. Flossmoor police officers will be at Rainbow Cone, 19805 S. Crawford Ave., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to meet with residents and to enjoy a sweet treat. The first 50 walk-in guests who show this flyer (digital or printed) will receive a free junior Rainbow Cone.
Kinderparent Orientation Night. Homewood School District 153 will host the orientation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Willow School, 1804 Willow Road. It will be an evening for parents/guardians of incoming kindergartners to learn more about the kindergarten experience at Willow School. Please note that children must be five years of age on or before Sept. 1 to register for kindergarten in 2025-2026.
Saturday, May 17
Homewood Public Works Open House. If you think learning about street resurfacing and water lines sounds boring, you’ve never seen kids delight from a ride in a bucket lift or getting to sit at the controls of an excavator and pretend to dig a trench. Kids love big machines, and public works has plenty of those. The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at 17755 Ashland Ave.
Wednesday, May 21
FSL House Walk. The Flossmoor Service League will be showcasing four beautiful homes in Flossmoor during its annual House Walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ttickets are available with a $30 donation. Tickets also can be purchased at UpsaDaisy Boutique, 18100 Martin Ave. in Homewood; GypsyFix, 1056 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor; and Art4Soul, 18135 Hardwood Ave. in Homewood. A buffet lunch will be available at Flossmoor Station between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets for lunch are $25. Please purchase luncheon tickets by May 16. A limited number of tickets will be available after that date.
Monday, May 26
Memorial Day in Flossmoor. Residents and community musicians come together for a remembrance event at 3 p.m. at the Village Hall flagpole, 2800 Flossmoor Road.
Thursday, May 29
A Decade of Impact Celebration. You Matter 2 will celebrate its first decade from 6 to 9 p.m. at Glenwoodie Golf Club, 19301 S. State St. in Glenwood. The youth leadership organization has had tremendous impact not only on the young people who participate in its programs but on the community through its many public service projects. Saturday, May 31
Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The summer tradition will return and will run every Saturday through Oct. 11. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday in Martin Square between Chestnut and Ridge roads in downtown Homewood.
