Pickleball Birthday Bash. From 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St., pickleball enthusiasts will have a chance to honor the birthday of Bill Bell, one of the founding creators of pickleball. There will be open play pickleball for $4.28 on 14 pickleball courts. There also will be clinics from 9 to 10 a.m., noon to 1 p.m., 5 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Click here to register for clinics.

Serena Hills Picnic & Fun Fair. From 5 to 7 p.m. the Serena Hills Leadership Club will host a family event at 255 Pleasant Drive, Chicago Heights. Bring a picnic dinner for you and your family for an evening full of games, activities and community fun.
Mental Health Summit. “What Should I Do in a Mental Health Crisis?” will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cook County Circuit Court’s Markham Courthouse, 16501 Kedzie Ave.
Topics will include mental health services, emergency hospital orders, power of attorney, guardianship, special needs trust, crisis intervention and firearm restraining orders. Panelists will offer information and address questions from participants.
Small Business Workshop. Part two of the Small Business Workshop Series, Build Your Business From the Ground Up sponsored by Cook County 5th District Commissioner Kisha McCaskill will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gloria Taylor Hall, 14821 Broadway Ave. in Harvey. The workshop is for anyone who has a side hustle and wants to turn it into a thriving, well-organized business. Park Pride. Volunteers will converge on H-F Park District parks from 9 a.m. to noon to help get everything ready for the summer season. Park Pride is a great opportunity for kids, scout groups, churches and other service organizations to give back to the community. Email [email protected] or call 708-957-0300 for more information.
Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.
Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

May the Fourth Be with You: Star Wars Party. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host Star Wars themed games, challenges and prizes. Dressing in costume is optional but encouraged. Register here.
Melody Mart Open House. Tour the music store at 18062 Dixie Highway from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Check out lesson studios, shop, meet instructors, try out instruments. There will be snacks. RSVP here.
Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby. Wreck League bout between Rebellion and Empire. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Action starts at 6 p.m. at Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road. Plan ahead
Metra Service Alert. On Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, Metra Electric trains will terminate and originate at the 18th Street station due to the NICTD expansion project. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule both days. No service will be available at Museum Campus/11th Street and Van Buren Street stations. ADA customers and those with mobility needs must transfer at McCormick Place to board a paratransit bus if they are traveling to and from Millennium Station. All other customers wishing to travel to and from Millennium Station must transfer to a shuttle bus at 18th Street.

Open House: Flossmoor Viaduct Drainage Improvements Project Phase 3. The next stage of the village’s five-phase flood relief project will begin soon. A new drainage line will be installed along Lawrence Crescent from the Heather Hill storm water basin to Maryland Avenue. The open house from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will be a chance for residents find information and ask questions about the project.
Saturday, May 10
Mother’s Day Tea Party. Celebrate mom with a relaxing tea party. Sip tea and lemonade, play fun games and show off your best hat for a friendly contest. Two sessions: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Cost is $50 for district residents, $60 for non-residents. Maximum of five per table. Limited spots available, so register here.

Homewood Public Works Open House. If you think learning about street resurfacing and water lines sounds boring, you’ve never seen kids delight from a ride in a bucket lift or getting to sit at the controls of an excavator and pretend to dig a trench. Kids love big machines, and public works has plenty of those. The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at 17755 Ashland Ave.

A Decade of Impact Celebration. You Matter 2 will celebrate its first decade from 6 to 9 p.m. at Glenwoodie Golf Club, 19301 S. State St. in Glenwood. The youth leadership organization has had tremendous impact not only on the young people who participate in its programs but on the community through its many public service projects. Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The summer tradition will return and will run every Saturday through Oct. 11. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday in Martin Square between Chestnut and Ridge roads in downtown Homewood.
