Highlights:

Homewood-Flossmoor School District Board of Education Finance Committee will meet at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda was not available online by Sunday, but will appear here when it is.

Thornton Township Annual Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, followed by regular Board of Trustees meeting at 7 p.m. Both meetings will be held at township hall, 333 E. 162nd St. in South Holland. Highlight:
The annual meeting agenda includes a motion to place a referendum on the March 17, 2026, primary election ballot that reads: “Shall the State of Illinois, which has the second highest property taxes in the nation, deliver annual property tax rebates to the more than three million residential property taxpayers in Illinois, as provided for in the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund Act of 2019?”

Highlights: 

  • A public hearing on the proposed Harwood Avenue TIF District is on the agenda with a motion to continue the hearing until the May 27 meeting. 
  • Homewood Science Center Executive Director Edie Dobrez will present the center’s annual report. The annual reports from the Appearance Commission and Planning and Zoning Commission will be included in the consent agenda. 
  • An amendment to the village’s redevelopment agreement with HCF Homewood, developer of the Hartford Building to remove language that guaranteed a minimum return on cost, which could have resulted in payments from the village’s general fund, and provided for revenue sharing with the village once certain profit metrics were accomplished.

Flossmoor Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. in the library, 1000 Sterling Ave. The agenda is available here.

Monday, April 7

Teen Leadership Council. The council will meet from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Teens in 7th through 12th grades are invited to help with programming ideas, book suggestions or anything else that will help make the world around us a better place.

Wednesday, April 9

Little Red Donut Truck. The truck will have fresh apple cider donuts and cider at James Hart School, 18220 Morgan St., from 3 to 6 p.m. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the school. 

Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard, Swiftwalker. Homewood Historical Society will hold its meeting at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, followed by a program by Brian Conroy, vice president of the Will County Historical Society, on “Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard, Swiftwalker.”

Thursday, April 10

Chess Club for Kids. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host the club from 4 to 5 p.m. It is an opportunity for kids aged 7 and up to practice chess skills or learn the basics of the game.

Hunger Games. For Teen Movie Club, the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will be showing “The Hunger Games” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enjoy pizza and a movie with your friends.

Friday, April 11

Senior Social Hour. Seniors can gather for an hour of pleasant conversation and light refreshment from 1 to 2 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.

Saturday, April 12

Lucky Egg Hunt. Youngsters will have a chance to gather eggs, including a few special eggs with extra prizes, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Apollo Park, near Morgan Street and Bowling Green Road. For kids age 10 and younger. H-F Park District residents only. Free.

Lucky Dog Egg Hunt. Dogs and their people can hunt for treat-filled eggs at Apollo Park, near Morgan Street and Bowling Green Road, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Families and friendly, on-leash dogs welcome.

Yoga Storytime. Learn about monthly themes through movement, stories and songs from 11:30 to noon at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Registration is required. Parents/guardians are welcome to join, but will need their own mats. Wear comfortable clothing. For toddlers through 2nd graders.

International Candy Taste Test. Only two seats remain open for this sweet event at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Test your candy ID skills. The team with the most correct guesses wins a prize. Registration is required and limited

Art for Earth Day. Celebrate the Earth and create Art at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. The library is collecting plastic bottle caps for a community garden sculpture. There will also be a variety of art projects to make using recycled objects. If anyone has tools they could bring (ex. drill, electric screwdriver, mallet, gardening hand shovel) please email [email protected]Registration is recommended but not required. 

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group, which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go further. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run, and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Saturday, April 19

Homewood Cleanup Day. In honor of Earth Day, Homewood is hosting a community clean-up from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The village will provide garbage bags, gloves, trash pickers and safety vests. Volunteers should meet at Homewood Public Works, 17755 Ashland Ave. Sign up to volunteer here.

Thursday, April 24

Gnomes and Gnosh. The Village of Homewood is partnering with the Homewood Public Library and the H-F Park District to host an event for Homewood and Flossmoor seniors ages 55 and up from 10 a.m. to noon at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Participants will be able to create coasters and enjoy a light breakfast at no charge. Registration is limited.
