Election 2025: One new member joins District 153 school board

Becky Popelka was the top vote-getter with 2,360 votes in the Homewood School District 153 school board election April 1.

Broderick Booth, who was up for reelection, received 2,275 votes, and Christine Scully, who is serving on the board by appointment, ran in her first school board race. She received 2,366 votes.

There was one seat open on the board as Shelly Marks, long-time board member and current board president, decided not to seek reelection. She will serve at her last board meeting on May 5.

An important role for the next school board will be finding District 153’s next superintendent. Current Superintendent Scott McAlister is retiring in June 2026. At the March meeting, the board hired a search firm to help them find qualified candidates to interview.
