Highlights: Carl Estelle, who has served as director of police services since July 2024, is expected to be sworn in as police chief. The board will consider a joint funding agreement necessary to receive a nearly $1.2 million state grant to cover most of the cost of the downtown streetscape project. The board will also consider a phase 3 construction engineering services contract with Baxter & Woodman for overseeing the streetscape project.

Highlights: A resolution to grant nearly $2 million in property tax abatements and a contract for more than $1 million for replacing the roof on the A Building.

Monday, Feb. 17
Slime Scientists. Kids in grades kindergarten through sixth can make their own slime from 4 to 5 p.m. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will supply all the ingredients.
Soup for the Soul. More than two dozen chefs are set to attend the second annual Soup for the Soul, a soup-tasting event and fundraiser for the Center for Food Equity in Medicine (CFFEIM), at the FCC Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor from 5 until 8 p.m.
Life’s Essentials for Stroke Prevention. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a presentation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. about stroke risk factors and prevention, including the signs and symptoms of a stroke, personal risk factors for having a stroke and methods to prevent having a stroke.
Tuesday, Feb. 18
Just For Fun: Art Night. It’s all about the process. Adults are invited to come play with different mediums and techniques. Maybe you’ll love what you make, maybe you’ll hate it. Either way, you’ll have fun from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.
KinderCamp. KinderCamp aims to ease the transition to school for little learners. Each week’s session at noon, hosted by Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, includes a story and lesson or craft, allowing children to learn and practice some of the skills needed for school.
Wednesday, Feb. 19
Blood Drive. Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, 20201 S. Crawford Ave., will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here to make an appointment.
The Light of Truth. The Flossmoor Arts Council will host a screening of “The Light of Truth: Richard Hunt’s Monument to Ida B. Wells” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at FCC Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor.
The Underground Railroad in the Chicago Southland. Historian Larry McClellan will present “The Underground Railroad in the Chicago Southland” at 7 p.m. in Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The Black History Month event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Homewood-Flossmoor Area.
Thursday, Feb. 20
Computer Class for Adults: Introduction to Internet & Email. The session will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Registration closes at 5 p.m. Feb. 19.
Karaoke at the Q. Twisted Q BBQ, 2053 Ridge Road, will host karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 21
Sweetheart Dance. The H-F Park District will host an event from 6 to 8 p.m. for dads, grandfathers, uncles and mentors to take their sweethearts aged 3 to 12 on a date at the H-F Sports Complex, 18211 S. Jazz at PSC. The 36th annual Prairie State College Jazz Festival Concert will start at 7:30 p.m. at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. World-class professionals and talented student musicians will perform. Tickets are $10, with group rates available, $5 for seniors and PSC students. Tickets are available at the door.

Homewood Indoor Market. Vendors will be open for business in the Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Star Wars and More. Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert “Star Wars and More: A Celebration of John Williams” is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. Catholic Charities Food Drive. Volunteers at St. John Neumann Parish, 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood, will be collecting non-perishable food items from 9 to 11 a.m. in the parish parking lot. Food will be donated to the Catholic Charities distribution center serving the South Suburbs.
Friends Saturday Book Sale. Friends of Homewood Public Library will host a book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library, 17917 Dixie Highway.

Meet, Pet & Paint Rico the Sloth. Bottle & Bottega, 2009 Ridge Road in Homewood, will have a sloth, Rico, visit the shop at 11 a.m. for a painting party. Times are still being confirmed, but the dates include Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 candidates on Saturday, March 1, in the Flossmoor Village Hall board room, 2800 Flossmoor Road; Flossmoor mayoral candidates followed by trustee candidates on Saturday, March 8, at the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway; Homewood mayoral candidates followed by trustee candidates on Saturday, March 15, at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway; Hazel Crest mayoral candidates followed by trustee candidates on Saturday, March 22, at Martin Kauchak Public Safety Building, 3000 W. 170th St.

Heart & Soul. The Ingalls Development Foundation will host Ingalls Impact: Heart & Soul culinary event at the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Flossmoor Family Care Center, 19550 Governors Highway in Flossmoor. The event from 7 to 10 p.m. will feature the talents of local Flossmoor area chefs, a live musical performance and beer from Flossmoor Station. Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., Olympia Fields, will host an opportunity from 9 to 10 a.m. to learn about the process of converting maple sap into syrup during a stroll through the forest followed by a pancake feast. Registration is required. The fee is $9 for district residents, $11 for non-residents.
