Two local school districts will shift to e-learning classes on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and Homewood-Flossmoor Park District recreation activities have been canceled because of extreme cold weather.
The National Weather Service forecasters expect the overnight low Monday to be 5 degrees below zero, and the high temperature Tuesday to be 3 degrees above zero. With winds 10 to 15 mph and gusts to 20 mph, the wind chill factor will be about 24 degrees below zero during the day.
Homewood School District 153, Flossmoor School District 161 and Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 have canceled in-person classes. Students will participate online instead.
In a notice on the Homewood-Flossmoor High School website, district officials noted that temperatures could rise later in the day. “Students involved in afterschool activities will be indoors, therefore sports and activities may be held after 3 p.m. at the discretion of the coaches and sponsors. Coaches and sponsors will communicate directly with students.”
The District 233 Board of Education meeting will meet as scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave.
The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District announced that all recreation programs for Tuesday, will be canceled, including those held at Irwin Community Center and H-F Ice Arena. Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center and H-F Racquet & Fitness Club will be open regular hours, but Wiley’s Grill at Coyote Run Golf Course will be closed.
