With fewer migrants being sent to Illinois recently and shelter populations now declining, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, is calling on the state to redirect funding intended for migrant issues toward new direct property tax relief payments for modest-income, qualifying homeowners in the South Suburbs.
“Homeowners are rightfully frustrated by skyrocketing property taxes, and they expect the state to intervene and take real action to provide relief,” DeLuca said. “Many communities, especially those in the South Suburbs, feel property taxes are an immediate concern. I believe we should adjust our budget accordingly, and should put that money back in the pockets of our residents.”
DeLuca’s House Bill 5913 would redirect unspent state budget dollars intended for migrant issues and instead create a one-time property tax rebate for low and moderate-income homeowners. This rebate would be available specifically for those who live in Bloom, Calumet, Rich, Thornton or Bremen townships in Cook County.
“Our state spending should reflect changes in needs and responsibilities,” DeLuca said. “Right now, we need to focus on property tax relief, and this measure would be a strong step to support the residents of my district – many of whom recently received their triennial reassessment. When lawmakers return to Springfield, let’s prioritize a comprehensive approach to property taxes that reduces the burden on homeowners and better focuses our spending on the issues facing families in our communities.”
