Homewood School District 153 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the James Hart Media Center, 18220 Morgan St. The agenda is available here.

Highlights: The board will consider the preliminary 2024 property tax levy, a resolution for a property tax relief grant and fees for use of district facilities.

Flossmoor Public Art Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here.

Flossmoor Board of Fire and Police Commissioners will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here. After a public comment period, the board plans to meet in closed session.

Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 Board of Education Finance Committee will meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.

Highlights: The commission will consider improvements for a proposed restaurant in the former Citgo gas station at 2124 W. 183rd St. and a sign variance for a proposed Dave’s Hot Chicken restaurant at  17631 Halsted St., the former site of MOD Pizza.

Women’s Poker Night. Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery will host a “dive into the thrilling world of Texas Hold ‘Em” hosted by A.J. Rudolph at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person. RSVP by calling 708-957-2739.

Friday, Nov. 15

Owl Prowl. “Ever wondered if an owl really is as smart as they say? Why don’t we hear them when they fly? Just how far can an owl see? Come with the whole family to learn about owl calls, behavior and habitat as we take a short walk into the surrounding habitat to call for owls and listen for whooo might call back” from 7 to 8 p.m. at Irons Oaks, 20000 Western Ave. For anyone over age 5. Saturday, Nov. 16

Toxic Tour. South Suburbs for Greenspace will conduct a second Toxic Tour through Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve with board member and environmental scientist David Zaber starting at 2 p.m. Volunteer guides will take groups of 12 on a two-mile hike to view polluted ponds and will discuss science issues, civic issues and impact on people, pets, and wildlife. Meet at the main Ridge Road Parking lot. The last group will depart at 2:25 p.m. Email [email protected] with questions.

Holiday Canvas Painting Fundraiser for Cat Habitat. Cat Habitat of Homewood will benefit from a painting event, 2 p.m. at Abundant Grace United Church of Christ, 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood.

Walk and Talk. The Cook County Forest Preserves will host an informative hike at Plum Creek Play Meadow, 22313 Burnham Ave, Chicago Heights. “Walk & Talk Hikes are for the curious mind who want to know more about the Forest Preserves and natural areas. Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby. Playoff bout between the Horrific Haunters and the Retro Rumblers at Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road. Doors open at 7:15 p.m., action begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 online, $20 at the door, trackside $20, front row $25. Accessible seating available at no extra charge.

Fragments of Flossmoor Book Chat. Author Kristine Condon will be at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. from 2 to 3 p.m. and again from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, to discuss her book, “Fragments of Flossmoor: A Series of Essays on the Interesting, Curious, and Unique in Our Village.” “This series of 15 essays sharing little-known pieces of Flossmoor history and the contributions of veterans to our community will make for fascinating discussion.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase, with 100% of sales benefiting the Flossmoor Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor project. Registration is not required.

Butterball Burner 5K. The H-F Park District’s 20th annual Thanksgiving 5K run will start at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. “Burn some extra calories before your big Thanksgiving meal and enjoy a fun filled run/walk.” All ages and abilities welcome. Early bird registration deadline for the $30 fee is Nov. 19. After that, registration will be $35. Click here to register.

Ruth Page’s Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, “The Nutcracker,” will be performed from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Governors State University Center for Performing Arts, 1 University Parkway, University Park. “This beloved holiday family classic is the only production that recreates the original version’s full-length staging. International guest artists will perform alongside the Ruth Page Civic Ballet elite dancers.” Tickets available here.
