Highlights:
- Consider authorizing a study to recommend improvements to the backup power at village hall, which experienced outages following the July 15 tornado.
- Consider approving small business facade improvement grants for seven projects.
- Information and discussion about the 2024 property tax levy. A public hearing and vote on the levy are expected to be held at the board’s Dec. 10 meeting.
- Consider approving more $543,000 to upgrade the motor control center of Water Supply Plant No. 1.
- Consider a second extension on a letter of intent with Rabid Ground to continue due diligence on a proposal to purchase village-owned property at 3003-3025 W. 183rd St. The local brewery is hoping to move to the 183rd Street location from its current home on Bretz Drive.
Flossmoor Board of Fire and Police Commissioners will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here. After a public comment period, the board plans to meet in closed session.
Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 Board of Education Finance Committee will meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.

Owl Prowl. “Ever wondered if an owl really is as smart as they say? Why don’t we hear them when they fly? Just how far can an owl see? Toxic Tour. South Suburbs for Greenspace will conduct a second Toxic Tour through Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve with board member and environmental scientist David Zaber starting at 2 p.m. Volunteer guides will take groups of 12 on a two-mile hike to view polluted ponds and will discuss science issues, civic issues and impact on people, pets, and wildlife. Meet at the main Ridge Road Parking lot. The last group will depart at 2:25 p.m. Email [email protected] with questions.
Holiday Canvas Painting Fundraiser for Cat Habitat. Cat Habitat of Homewood will benefit from a painting event, 2 p.m. at Abundant Grace United Church of Christ, 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
Walk and Talk. The Cook County Forest Preserves will host an informative hike at Plum Creek Play Meadow, 22313 Burnham Ave, Chicago Heights. “Walk & Talk Hikes are for the curious mind who want to know more about the Forest Preserves and natural areas. Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby. Playoff bout between the Horrific Haunters and the Retro Rumblers at Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road. Fragments of Flossmoor Book Chat. Author Kristine Condon will be at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. from 2 to 3 p.m. and again from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, to discuss her book, “Fragments of Flossmoor: A Series of Essays on the Interesting, Curious, and Unique in Our Village.” “This series of 15 essays sharing little-known pieces of Flossmoor history and the contributions of veterans to our community will make for fascinating discussion.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase, with 100% of sales benefiting the Flossmoor Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor project. Registration is not required.
Butterball Burner 5K. The H-F Park District’s 20th annual Thanksgiving 5K run will start at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. “Burn some extra calories before your big Thanksgiving meal and enjoy a fun filled run/walk.” All ages and abilities welcome. Early bird registration deadline for the $30 fee is Nov. 19. After that, registration will be $35. Click here to register.
Ruth Page’s Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, “The Nutcracker,” will be performed from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Governors State University Center for Performing Arts, 1 University Parkway, University Park. “This beloved holiday family classic is the only production that recreates the original version’s full-length staging. International guest artists will perform alongside the Ruth Page Civic Ballet elite dancers.” Tickets available here.
