Your government
Election Day. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters can find out what’s on their ballots and where they should go to vote by visiting the Cook County Clerk’s election website. Ballots will include races for U.S. president, U.S. representatives, state representatives, state’s attorney, clerk of the circuit court, county clerk, state supreme court, appellate court, circuit court, subcircuit court and Board of Review.
There also will be three advisory questions on the ballot:
- “Should any candidate appearing on the Illinois ballot for federal, State, or local office be
subject to civil penalties if the candidate interferes or attempts to interfere with an election worker’s official duties?” - “Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to create an additional 3% tax on income
greater than $1,000,000 for the purpose of dedicating funds raised to property tax relief?” - “Should all medically appropriate assisted reproductive treatments, including, but
not limited to, in vitro fertilization, be covered by any health insurance plan in Illinois that
provides coverage for pregnancy benefits, without limitation on the number of treatments?”

Flossmoor Board of Trustees will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here. The livestream of the meeting can be viewed here. Use meeting ID 826 8015 0337, passcode 60422.
Highlights: The board will discuss the possibility of providing a security camera system in partnership with Flossmoor School District 161 to monitor the new storm water detention basin at Heather Hill School.
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Goldberg Administration Center, 3301 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here.
Homewood-Flossmoor Board of Education will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.
Highlight: The board will consider “possible action to approve new superintendent employment agreement.”
Homewood Beautification Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. No agenda posted on the village website.

Thursday, Nov. 7
HPL 100th Anniversary Celebration. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a second centennial celebration from 4 to 7 p.m. “Join us for light refreshments and a trip down memory lane.” The library also hosted a party April 27 to mark the anniversary.
Pathways Home Annual Fundraiser. South Suburban PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter, or SSPADS) is hosting its 2024 Pathways Home Annual Fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Dolphin Lake Clubhouse, 2700 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The evening is a ticketed event open to local businesses, the faith community, foundations, volunteers, and individuals with a passion and vision to impact the community to help individuals and families escape homelessness.
Friday, Nov. 8
Senior Social Hour. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a social gathering for adults and seniors from 2 to 3 p.m. “Join us for an hour of light refreshments and pleasant conversation. Registration is not required.”
Saturday, Nov. 9
Foundation 153 Winter Market. Foundation 153, which supports District 153 teachers and students, will hold a market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 18205 Aberdeen St. in Homewood. Entry for shoppers is free. Crafters, makers, businesses and other vendors will be there.
Izaak Walton Annual Turkey Raffle, Bake Sale and Auction Party. The Izaak Walton Preserve’s annual fundraiser will start at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9. Doors at Senior Hall, 1100 Ridge Road, open at 6:15 p.m. Raffle tickets will cost $5 or $25 for a booklet of six tickets. Grand prizes will range from $150 to $500.
Homers and Hot Chocolate Hitting Derby Fundraiser. The Flossmoor Firebirds travel baseball team, which is affiliated with Flossmoor Baseball and Softball, will hold a hitting derby at noon at Bronco Field, 1000 Brassie Ave. Register here to participate.
DIY Tie-Dye Teddy Bear Workshop for Adults. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host an opportunity for adults to tie-dye a teddy bear from 11 a.m. to noon. “Join us to create a groovy no-mess tie dye teddy bear! Before painting you will bring your bear to life by hand stuffing it with fluff. We will then give Teddy bursts of color using a unique bottled paint system which when applied, seeps and flows, creating a tie-dye effect without the mess.” Registration is required.
H. H. Holmes & New Links to Chicago & the White City. The South Suburban Genealogical & Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. in the Martin Kauchak Public Safety Center, 3000 W. 170th Place, Hazel Crest. The presenter will be Ray Johnson, who will present “H. H. Holmes & New Links to Chicago & the White City. “Ever since Erik Larson’s book ‘Devil in The White City,’ the murderous swindler H.H. Holmes has been linked to the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Ray Johnson, ‘The History Cop,’ discusses new links between Holmes and Thomas B. Bryan and Daniel H. Sunday, Nov. 10
HBA Fashion Show. The Homewood Business Association will sponsor a fashion show in the lobby of La Banque Hotel, 2034 Ridge Road, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased here. Continental breakfast and two drinks included. “Donate a gently worn coat benefitting Open Access and be entered to win a Shop Homewood Gift Basket.”

IPO Fashion Show. The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will host its annual fashion show with a boutique at 11 a.m., luncheon at 1 p.m. and the fashion show at 2 p.m. at Idlewild Country Club, 19201 Dixie Highway. Tickets are $65.
Plan ahead
Women’s Poker Night. Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery will host a “dive into the thrilling world of Texas Hold ‘Em” hosted by A.J. Rudolph at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14. Tickets are $20 per person. RSVP by calling 708-957-2739.
Holiday Canvas Painting Fundraiser for Cat Habitat. Cat Habitat of Homewood will benefit from a painting event, 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Abundant Grace United Church of Christ, 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
Toxic Tour. South Suburbs for Greenspace will conduct a second Toxic Tour through Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve with board member and environmental scientist David Zaber starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. Volunteer guides will take groups of 12 on a two-mile hike to view polluted ponds and will discuss science issues, civic issues and impact on people, pets, and wildlife. Meet at the main Ridge Road Parking lot. The last group will depart at 2:25 p.m. Email [email protected] with questions.
