Monday, Oct. 28

Creepy Fun for Kids. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host a Halloween activity for kids age 3 to 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. “Do you like shivering and giggling? This is the program for you! We will tell spooky stories around a fake campfire and become mad scientists with an experiment! Please wear clothing that can get messy. Children under 9 years old must have an adult caregiver stay with them at the program.”

Learn to Curl. The H-F Park District will host lessons on the sport of curling at the H-F Ice Arena, 777 Kedzie Road from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Mondays from Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. In the first session, the focus will be on the fundamentals. In the second session, participants will be “all set for game play.” Participants should bring clean, grippy shoes, and dress in warm layers. For ages 15 and up. The fee is $65 for district residents, $75 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Wednesday, Oct. 30

South of Chi Halloween Party. Thornton Distilling, 400 Margaret St. in Thornton, will host the improv group’s Halloween party starting at 7 p.m. “Come enjoy some drinks, laughs, and candy as we celebrate Halloween. Costumes encouraged.” Tickets are $10.

Thursday, Oct. 31

Trick or Treat hosted by the Village of Homewood. Four village locations will be handing out full-sized candy bars to trick or treaters from 3 to 5 p.m. Visit village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road, the police and fire departments at 17950 Dixie Highway and the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Trick or Treat in the community. Trick or treat hours in Homewood and Flossmoor will be 3 to 7 p.m.

Family Fright Fest. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a night of Halloween fun for families from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be activities, games and storytelling with Adventures in Reading Inc.

Friday, Nov. 1

Everybody. The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Theatre Program will present “Everybody,” its fall production, at 4 and 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. “Everybody” by Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins “is a modern riff on the 15th century morality play ‘Everyman.’ This play is most appropriate for audiences ages 13 and older. Tickets for the production are sold online at https://gofan.co. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $5 for high school students.

Saturday, Nov. 2

Pumpkin Smash. H-F Park District will host its annual pumpkin smash composting event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Coyote Run Golf Course. “Don’t Trash it, Smash it! The Pumpkin Smash is an annual effort to divert pumpkins from landfills by providing locations for residents to drop-off jack-o-lanterns to be composted.”

Ho-Flo Cranksgiving. GoodSpeed Cycles sponsors a “food drive on two wheels — part bike ride, part scavenger hunt” from noon to 4 p.m. Participants will need to spend a minimum $20 on food purchases. The ride starts at GoodSpeed, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Riders will get a list of stores and food items to buy. Food should be delivered to Rabid Brewing, 17759 Bretz Drive in Homewood by 4 p.m. Food will be donated to the food bank at Restoration Ministries in Harvey. Sign up here.

The Beat Goes On. Lisa McClowry will star in a tribute to Cher celebrating six decades in the life and career pop music and film star at the Governors State University Center for Performing Arts, 1 University Parkway, University Park. “The show incorporates dynamic dialogue, humor, seriously fun audience participation, eight costume changes, and video projection.” Many of Cher’s hit songs will be part of the show, including: “I Got You Babe,” “Gypsies Tramps and Thieves,” “I Found Someone,” “The Way of Love,” “Dark Lady,” “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Believe.” Tickets are available here.

Fall Art Workshop. H-F Park District will host an art class for kids age 6 to 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. “Participants will create seasonal projects, including fall themed crafts, painting, drawing and sculpture. Class is open to all skill levels. The instructor will be Terry Nemchock. The fee is $30 for district residents, $40 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Preschool Open Gym. H-F Park District will host a session of supervised play for children age 2 to 5 accompanied by a parent from 9 to 9:45 a.m. “It’s a chance for little ones to: develop gross motor skills, boost social skills, and spark imagination and creativity.” The fee is $5. Click here to register.

Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome. 

Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.

Plan ahead

Izaak Walton Annual Turkey Raffle, Bake Sale and Auction Party. The Izaak Walton Preserve’s annual fundraiser will start at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9. Doors at Senior Hall, 1100 Ridge Road, open at 6:15 p.m. Raffle tickets will cost $5 or $25 for a booklet of six tickets. Grand prizes will range from $150 to $500.

Foundation 153 Winter Market. The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10, at 18205 Aberdeen St. in Homewood. “Foundation 153 is a not-for-profit organization that provides grants to the district and staff of the Homewood School District 153. Entry for shoppers is free and the entire event is indoors. We have crafters, makers, businesses, and vendors of all sorts.”

Holiday Canvas Painting Fundraiser for Cat Habitat. Cat Habitat of Homewood will benefit from a painting event, 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Abundant Grace United Church of Christ, 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
