Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Normandy Villa, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights. The agenda is available here. The livestream of the meeting can be viewed here. The board’s Learning and Instruction Committee will meet at 5 p.m., also at Normandy Villa.
Highlights: The board will consider approving upgrading the security camera systems in district schools and a contract with Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center for 2024-25 outdoor education programming. The Learning and Instruction Committee will discuss standards-based learning and grading.
Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in The Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.
Highlights: The board will see a presentation on the strategic plan’s first-year goals and is expected to consider approving new courses and a Maintenance Project Grant application. The board also will discuss the Heather Hill School building addition construction timeline.
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Goldberg Administrative Center, 3301 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here.
Highlights: The board will hear presentations on the financial report for the fiscal year that ended April 30, 2024, and on the general obligation bond issue. The board also will discuss the tax levy, which is expected to be approved on Dec. 3.
Homewood School District 153 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the media center at James Hart School, 18220 Morgan St. The agenda is available here.
Highlights: The district will present the annual Dockweiler, Morin and Student Support awards.
Homewood Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the library, 17917 Dixie Highway. When it’s available, the agenda will be found here.
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Community Input Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in The Clubhouse at Dolphin Lake, Governors Highway and 183rd Street in Homewood. The district is updating its master plan and asks for input from residents.

Wednesday, June 16
History of the Electoral College. The League of Women Voters of the Homewood-Flossmoor Area will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, to provide information on the history of the Electoral College. The meeting will take place in the Flossmoor village hall board room, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The speaker will be David Brodnax Sr., professor of history at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights and an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law.
Ollie’s Grand Opening. The discount store will celebrate its opening from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 3043 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ollie’s is in the former Big Lots location.
Hysteria in Salem. Actor Terry Lynch will portray magistrate John Hawthorne to recount “the hysteria, paranoia and resulting trials that took place during the mid-17th century in Salem, Massachusetts.” The one-man show will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at the Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Registration is not required.
Thursday, Oct. 17
Witches’ Night Out. Homewood Business Association will welcome witches and their friends to Martin Square from 5 to 8 p.m. on for some witches’ brew, shopping, photos and a best hat contest.
Friday, Oct. 18
County Line Orchard Trip. The H-F Park District trip to the pumpkin farm will leave at 8 a.m. from Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood and return at 1 p.m. The tour is for children ages 2 to 6 and will cover topics including pollination, photosynthesis, apple picking, apple packing and cider making. There is no food available to purchase on the tour, but souvenirs will be for sale. A parent or guardian must be present for this program. The cost is $35 for district residents and $40 for non-residents. Click here to register.
Homewood Brewing Company Grand Opening. The new craft brewery and restaurant at 18225 Dixie Highway will be open to the public from 2 to 6 p.m. The establishment is dedicated to co-owner Carmela Wallace’s late son, Jarad Higgins, aka Juice WRLD, the star rapper who died 2019.
Trunk or Treat at CDE. The Center for Dental Excellence will host a trunk or treat event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 19615 Governors Highway in Flossmoor. Children age 16 and under are welcome to attend. Costumes are encouraged but not required. There will be a raffle for a child’s Sonicare or an Adult teeth whitening kit.
Cheerleading Youth Night at H-F. Halftime at the H-F High School varsity football game will feature youth cheerleaders. Cheerleading practices are Oct. 15, 16 and 17. The fee is $60. Click here to register. Band students from both Parker Junior High and James Hart School will join the Viking Marching Band for special pre-game and half-time performances. Haunted House Tour for Teens. H-F Park District will host the tour for anyone aged 12 to 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. of “the most spine-chilling haunted houses in the area.” The tour will leave from Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Saturday, Oct. 19
Fall Tree Planting in Flossmoor. Volunteers are invited to help with the village’s annual fall tree planting project from 8 to 11 a.m. Meet up at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. Volunteers should bring a shovel, work gloves, closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Anyone under age 16 must be accompanied by a volunteering adult, and all volunteers must be prepared to get to other locations in town, according to village officials. Click here to register. Spooky Storytime. The Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host from 2 to 4 p.m. stories that “begin with the fun and spooky, to thrilling scary stories to tell in the dark, and up through the macabre tales of Edgar Allen Poe.” Light refreshments will be provided. Costumes are welcome. Children under 9 years old must have an adult caregiver stay with them at the program. Register here.
Prairie State College Open House. PSC will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to noon on the main campus, 202 Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. This free event is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to explore the campus, meet faculty and staff, and learn about all the programs the college has to offer.
Twilight Drag Bingo. H-F Park District will host a bingo event that sparkles from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Sasha Love will host and perform. For ages 21 and up. Cost is $25 for district residents, $30 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Walk Walton. The annual Homewood Science Center fest and fundraiser will be at Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults, $10 for kids and free for seniors. Click here to register. Activities will include:

- Spooky science in Black Bear Lodge.
- Exploring nature with Forest Preserves of Cook County staff.
- Taking part in a special project led Middle School Conservation Ecology Interns.

Know Your Oaks Hike. Register by Oct. 14 for an opportunity to learn about oak trees in the region. The program from 1 to 3 p.m. at Thorn Creek Woods Nature Preserve, 247 Monee Road, Park Forest, is sponsored by the Thorn Creek Audubon Society. Register by calling 708-747-6320. For anyone age 18 and up. Participants should be prepared to walk more than two miles outdoors on natural surface trails across uneven terrain.

Yoga for a Cause. Proceeds from a yoga session from 7 to 8 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road, on Monday, Oct. 21, will benefit youth leadership organization You Matter 2.
Flashlight Pumpkin Hunt. Five half-hour hunts will start at 6 p.m. on Oct. 25 for kids age 3 to 12 at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave. in Olympia Fields. “Visit our woodland pumpkin patch after dark while stopping for fun and games along the trail. Do a spooky craft and enjoy a sweet treat.” The cost for H-F Park District residents will be $10 and $15 for non-residents. Click here to register.
Halloween Party. Wiley’s Grill, 800 Kedzie Ave., will host a party from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25, with Frank Sinatra tribute act Peter Oprisko. Centennial Celebration Trivia Night and Costume Contest. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host a trivia night and costume contest to celebration the village’s 100th anniversary. The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 25 in the library’s main level.
Trick or Treat Trail. H-F Park District will host its annual trick or treat event for children ages 10 and under from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at Millennium Park. The event is free for district residents, $2 for non-residents. Click here to register.
Weavings & Diversities. The Weaver’s Guild South show and sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 in Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road, is sponsored by the Homewood Arts Council.
Interview with Johnny Iguana. Homewood Arts Council will present an interview at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 in Senior Hall at Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road, with the co-founder of the Claudettes and co-composer of the soundtrack for the TV show “The Bear.” Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Dr. Frances Wright Scholarship Fund at Prairie State College in memory of the late Dr. Karen O’Donnell.
