Flossmoor Board of Trustees will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The meeting normally occurs on Monday, but was moved because of the Labor Day holiday. Find the agenda here.
Highlights: The board will
- Consider endorsing a Class 8 property tax relief designation for BRC Capital LLC, which is renovating the building at 1615 Vollmer Road, home of Embassy Cigar Lounge.
- Ratify costs for emergency storm and sanitary repairs near the Brookwood Bridge replacement project.
- Consider a resolution authorizing the village to enter into a cooperative purchasing agreement to help the fire department replace extrication equipment that is nearly 30 years old.
Bremen Township Board of Trustees will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at 15350 S. Oak Park Ave., Oak Forest, to pay bills and at 7 p.m. for the regular meeting. No agenda was posted on the township website as of Sunday morning, Sept. 1.

Highlights: The commission will consider
- Site plans for a proposed Starbucks on an out-lot at the former Brunswick Zone/Big Lots property, 3043-3055 W. 183rd Street.
- A request for a sign variance on exterior signs on and near the Wind Creek Casino parking garage at 174th and Halsted streets.
- Providing input on the design of a proposed mural for the new alley on the west side of The Hartford at 2033 Ridge Road. The proposal has been submitted by Chicago artist Nate Otto, who provided examples of the type of murals he creates.
Holiday Week
Trash pickup. Residential trash pick up will be moved forward one day, so Monday routes will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday routes on Wednesday, Wednesday routes on Thursday, Thursday routes on Friday. There will be one exception. In Flossmoor, Friday routes will be picked up on Friday, as usual, because of the Hidden Gem Half Marathon on Saturday.
Government offices. Most government offices, including Homewood and Flossmoor village halls, Homewood and Flossmoor public libraries and Homewood and Flossmoor post offices will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.
Hidden Gem Half Marathon closures. The Flossmoor Public Library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 7, for the Hidden Gem. The library will close at noon Friday, Sept. 6, for a staff in-service. Monday, Sept. 2
Last Splash. Today is the last day the Splash Pad at Millennium Park on Harwood Avenue in Homewood will be open for this season. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 3
Homewood Citizen Civics Academy. Today is the deadline to sign up for the fall Citizens Civics Academy is Sept. 3. The sessions are from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evenings from Sept. 23 to Oct. 28. Click click here to register.
Regional Transportation Authority Presentation. RTA will offer information about its programs and services from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.
Saturday, Sept. 7
Hidden Gem Half Marathon. The fifth annual race will start at 7:30 a.m. on Flossmoor Road near the intersection with Douglas Avenue. About 1,200 runners are signed up to compete, and Flossmoor residents will be outside cheering them on. There will be road closures in neighborhoods throughout the village as the race continues. The finish line is on Sterling Avenue near Flossmoor Public Library. Most roads will be open by 11 a.m. Streets downtown will be closed until about 2 p.m. See hiddengemhalf.com for more detailed information.
Kegs & Eggs. The post-race celebration is a new event immediately following the Hidden Gem Half Marathon. Food, drink and entertainment will start at 10 a.m. and go until 1 p.m. in downtown Flossmoor.
Grandparents’ Day Festival. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a “fun-filled day of games, light refreshments and prizes in celebration of Grandparents’ Day” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A photo booth station will be available.
Late 80s Hip Hop Night. Rabid Brewing, 17759 Bretz Drive in Homewood, will host music and trivia from 1985 to 1989 from 8 to 11 p.m.
STEM Saturdays. Homewood Science Center hosts science activities every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 18022 Dixie Highway.
The Village of Homewood Treeshare Program. The program will return after a cicada-related hiatus in the spring. Residents will be able to purchase two trees each in the village hall parking lot, 2020 Chestnut Road, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. Tree types, costs, and care instructions are available on the village website.
Homewood Farmers Market. Fresh produce, artisan foods, handcrafted personal care item vendors plus live music will all be available on Martin Square between Ridge Road and Chestnut Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome.
Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.
Roller Derby. Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby will hold a minor league bout at 6 p.m. in Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road. Tickets are available at square.link/u/xdNiTwMP. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. Accessible seating available at no extra charge.
