Homewood School District 153 Board of Education will hold a Committee of the Whole meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at the district office conference room, 18205 Aberdeen St. in Homewood. The topic will be the possibility of expanding the early childhood/pre-kindergarten program for the 2025-2026 school year. Highlights: The board will consider approving:
- A proclamation honoring the 50th anniversary of Homewood’s emergency medical services.
- A budget amendment to account for costs of cleanup from the July 15 storm.
- Three ordinances that will create the new 183rd Street West tax increment financing district.
- Two Cook County Class 8 property tax relief designations, one for Wind Creek Casino and one for the former Girl Scouts building at 1005 175th St., which is being renovated and repurposed.
- A redevelopment agreement with Steve Phillipos for the renovation of Ford of Homewood, which is in the Kedzie Gateway TIF District.
- Two lighting purchases, one to improve the security and aesthetics in a new alley that was created by the construction of The Hartford. The alley runs between Ridge Road and the parking lot to the south. The other project is the replacement of exterior lighting at village hall.
- The dissolution of the E-COM emergency dispatch center board in preparation for the merger with Southcom and the formation of a new board.

Monday, Aug. 12
Dog Walking Group. Meet up at 7 p.m. at Indian Trails Park, Riegel and Willow Roads, for a free on-leash walk sponsored by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District. No registration is needed. Walkers will receive tips about exercising with their pets. Reminder: bring water for yourself and your dog.
Tuesday, Aug. 13
Theater Auditions. Community theater group 23 Miles South will hold auditions for two upcoming productions. From 6 to 7 p.m. actors ages 8 to 15 can audition for roles in “Scared Silly.” From 7 to 8 p.m. girls from age 10 to 18 and women from their 40s to 80s can audition for “Little Women.” Auditions will take place in the basement of Abundant Grace United Church of Christ, 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
Choo-Choo Ride. The weekly four- to five-mile bike ride through Homewood and Flossmoor neighborhoods. Riders will meet at 6 p.m. at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. The ride starts at 6:30 p.m. It continues Tuesdays weekly at the same place and time through Labor Day.
Friday, Aug. 16
Back to School Bash. The Village of Flossmoor, Flossmoor Public Library and School District 161 are hosting a Back to School Bash from 4 to 6 p.m. in Flossmoor Park. There will be games, resources, music and spirit wear swap.

Bid Whist. The H-F Park District will host Bid Whist games from 6 to 9 p.m. each Friday through Nov. 22 at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave., open to anyone 55 or older. There is a $5 drop-in fee.
Flossmoor Citizens’ Police Academy Signup Deadline. The academy will begin on Aug. 28 and meet weekly for 10 weeks. The program is designed to provide a working knowledge of the department. Saturday, Aug. 17
Homewood Farmers Market. Fresh produce, artisan foods, handcrafted personal care item vendors plus live music will all be available on Martin Square between Ridge Road and Chestnut Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome.
Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.
Sunday, Aug. 18
HoFlo Hundred. GoodSpeed Cycles, 2025 183rd St., announced the “HoFlo Hundred: A Friendly Neighborhood Metric Century,” a 62-mile ride around town from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18. The route will be within Homewood and Flossmoor. Three trips along the route will equal 100 kilometers. Find the route here. The cost is $10 per rider with the proceeds going to the James Hart Outride cycling program.

Sign up for A Haunting in Homewood: A Halloween Musical Revue. Rehearsals start Aug. 19 and are from 6 to 8 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway. Performances will be Oct. 5, 6, 12 and 13. Tuition is $150. Click here to register.
District 153 Back to School Party. The Village of Homewood and School District 153 will host a back to school/touch a truck event from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, in the village hall parking lot, 2020 Chestnut Road. There will be food trucks, a DJ, dancing, games and more.
