Drama Group’s ‘Miss Firecracker Contest’ opens June 7

The Drama Group presents the charming and irreverent comedy “The Miss Firecracker Contest” opening June 7 and presented over two weekends.

To be crowned Miss Firecracker of Brookhaven, Mississippi, is the dream of Carnelle Scott, but the townspeople have given her a rather tarnished reputation. Her nickname is “Miss Hot Tamale.”

Carnelle is out to change the community’s perception of her with the help of her quirky friend, Popeye, and erratic duo cousins Elain and Delmount who are out to prove the underdog can win.

The performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 13, 14 and 15. The 2 p.m. matinee performances are on Saturday, June 15, and on Sundays June 9 and 16.  All shows are at the Drama Group’s Milord Studio, 330 202nd Street in Chicago Heights.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for senior citizens and members of the military, and $19 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at dg.booktix.com or tickets can be purchased through the box office at 708-755-3444.

After this program, members of the Drama Group will be traveling to Hastings, England, to perform at The Stables Theatre, continuing a 25-year exchange between the two theater organizations.

The Drama Group receives a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency with federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Drama Group is a member of Southland Arts, a partnership of 26 local arts organizations.
