Colton resigns from Homewood board

Homewood Trustee Anne Colton announced Monday, April 29, that she is resigning from the board effective immediately.

In a statement, Colton cited frustration with her role on the board as a factor.

“I’ve encountered challenges that have prompted me to reassess my current role. My continuous effort with little impact has left me feeling frustrated and isolated. As such, I’ve decided to step down,” she said. Her full statement is included below.

When she campaigned for the seat, she focused on encouraging residents to be actively engaged in civic issues and improving communication between the board and residents. She posted board agendas to her Facebook page before each meeting and did post-meeting videos reporting on meeting business. She lobbied for the board to hold more town-hall-type meetings. The board held a committee of the whole meeting in September 2023.

She was first elected to the board in 2009 after serving on the Homewood Public Library Board of Trustees for three years. She was reelected to the village board in 2013 and 2017. In April 2018, she resigned, citing the need to focus on career opportunities as a documentary filmmaker.

She noted that she plans to pull back from social media participation and plans to devote more time to her film work, which includes telling the stories of nonprofit organizations, many of them local.

“Despite these challenges, my commitment to community service remains steadfast, driven by my profound dedication to the betterment of Homewood,” she said in the statement. “Moving forward, I am compelled to seek avenues where I can effect tangible change and contribute meaningfully to the causes I hold dear.”

Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld said he was surprised by Colton’s announcement but wished her well.

He will now look for someone to nominate to fill the seat until the April 1, 2025, municipal election. Whoever is elected then will serve the balance of Colton’s term, which ends in 2027.

Anne Colton’s resignation statement:

In a statement to the community, I want to express my gratitude for your support during my tenure of service over the past year. Throughout this time, I’ve worked diligently to promote inclusivity and equitable decision-making.

However, amidst these efforts, I’ve encountered challenges that have prompted me to reassess my current role. My continuous effort with little impact has left me feeling frustrated and isolated. As such, I’ve decided to step down.

Despite these challenges, my commitment to community service remains steadfast, driven by my profound dedication to the betterment of Homewood. Moving forward, I am compelled to seek avenues where I can effect tangible change and contribute meaningfully to the causes I hold dear. I will continue my professional work as a documentary filmmaker, telling stories to help nonprofits serve their missions.

I appreciate the understanding and respect for my decision and remain grateful for the opportunity to have served.
