The winter holiday season can be a difficult time for LGBTQ+ people and the people who love them, so PFLAG Homewood-Flossmoor is partnering with Creative Approaches to Therapy to offer a special workshop, “Thriving Through the Holidays,” on Sunday, Dec. 10.
The workshop is designed to help folks prepare strategies that can help them feel confident, supported and loved throughout the season, whatever their circumstances. The workshop is free to attend, but RSVP is required. The location will be provided upon registration. Learn more and RSVP at pflaghf.org/attend-a-meeting.
PFLAG Homewood-Flossmoor is a chapter of PFLAG National, an organization of LGBTQ+ people, parents, families, and allies who work together to create an equitable and inclusive world. The local chapter, founded in 2003, offers a safe, supportive space for LGBTQ+ people and their families to come together and build community in Chicago’s South Suburbs.
The workshop will cover topics such as healthy ways to manage anxiety and the stress of being out (or not) to people you may encounter at holiday gatherings and events.
There will be discussion about strategies for navigating confrontational family members, both as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and as someone who loves them and wants to offer support, and also strategies for coping with feelings of isolation and loneliness for those who choose not to attend family gatherings and holiday festivities at all.
The workshop will be cooperative and hands-on and Creative Approaches to Therapy will provide free DIY “holiday survival kits” to everyone who attends.
This special event will be integrated into PFLAG Homewood-Flossmoor’s regular monthly meeting in Homewood. PFLAG H-F support meetings are held the second Sunday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m., alternating between Homewood and Flossmoor.
The December meeting will dedicate the first hour to the regular support circle and the second hour to the workshop. Folks are welcome to come for the entire meeting or only stay for part.
The organization’s monthly meetings are open to all adult (18+) family members, friends, allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community and are designed to be a safe place to gather and build community.
