Parent finds special way to show thanks to Willow School teacher

Willow School teacher Angela Buhle is getting special treats from Kellogg’s thanks to a caring parent.

Brian Lyons nominated Buhle, his daughter Maddison’s kindergarten teacher, in the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain “Got Your Back” bin sweepstakes honoring teachers. Lyons found the contest advertised on Facebook.

Buhle was one of 150 random winners. Her prize from Kellogg’s includes 12 boxes of Kellogg’s® Nutri-Grain® bars, 48 free product coupons and a $100 gift card.

Lyons and his wife, Samantha Rutkowski, said they were happy to find a way to show their appreciation for Buhle’s work.

“We wanted to applaud Ms. Buhle for her overall teaching approach and the tons of little things she does for the kids every day,” he said. “Starting right from the summer’s ‘Meet The Teacher Day’ she made us and our daughter feel completely at ease with her and this new world of kindergarten.”

He recalled the teacher outlining all that would happen in the classroom and providing parents with a syllabus for the year.

“This has continued all school year with Ms. Buhle putting out weekly messages letting us know what letters, read words, math concepts, etc. the kids worked on this week and what we can do at home to help them continue their learning,” Lyons said. “Ms. Buhle is doing a great job creating the foundation of our daughter’s education and we can’t thank her enough for it.”

Homewood District 153 has an all-day kindergarten program, so Buhle is working with children from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The children are learning math concepts in the morning and reading in the afternoon with lots of play mixed into the day. The kids get time for drawing and writing, which they see as play time, but Buhle knows that can also be a learning experience.

Buhle said she was touched by Lyons’ comments. She does notes to the parents every Friday so they know the concepts she presented and to make certain parents check what their child is bringing home for the weekend.

Buhle started her career in television as a stage manager at WGN-TV. At age 30, she made a career change. She earned her teaching degree from Governors State University. She’s been teaching for 13 years. Her last two were at Willow School. She’s always been with the youngest students.

“I love little kids. I like teaching from the beginning,” Buhle said.
