On Wednesday, every kindergarten classroom at Willow School had a “grannie” or “grandpa” marking the 100th day of the school year.

Shannon Cotter's first grade class at Willow School was ready for some "construction" work. The theme was 100 as the school marked 100 days of school this year. Ms. Cotter set a timer for 100 seconds and students had to count how many jumping jacks, squats, push-ups and counting exercises they could accomplish in that time. (Marilyn Thomas/H-F Chronicle)

It’s become a tradition at the school for the youngest to dress up as senior citizens as they and their teachers try to emulate someone 100 years old. Wigs, fake mustaches, canes and special attire changed 5-year-olds into their elderly relatives and neighbors.

The first graders had a different task. They were on “construction crews” finding ways to make things that marked 100. Some tried to build a tower with 100 cups, others were constructing cakes from Play-Doh for 100 candles, and others did physical labor counting how many jumping jacks and sit-ups they could do in 100 seconds.
