District 153 recognizes achievements of Laura Kozel

Churchill School special education teacher Laura Kozel was honored by the District 153 school board for her outstanding efforts as a national board certified teacher.

To receive certification, teachers must show how their teaching aligns with five core standards, including a deep understanding of their students, content knowledge, use of data and assessments and teaching practice. Kozel earned certification five years ago. To keep the certification, it must be renewed every five years, which Kozel just did.

Kozel has been teaching for 25 years, 18 of those in District 153.

“You are so dedicated and so committed,” said Churchill School Principal Sara Schnoor at the Jan. 9 school board meeting. “You are a leader within our building. You are an incredible educator, and we are so lucky to have you.”

According to the National Board website, certification was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. It is the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education.

In other business, the board approved a $241,200 contract with Just Rite Acoustics for new window treatments in Willow, Churchill and James Hart Schools.

“It’s one of the little things that makes a big impact on teachers,” said Superintendent Scott McAlister who said the purchase is part of the $9.2 million improvements being made to the schools. “It’s not a glamour item,” but it will be appreciated by staff, he said.

McAlister said over the holiday break, the district staff also spent time replacing corroded pipes at Willow School. The issue with aging buildings was one of the points stressed by the November referendum supporters.

A two-classroom addition at Churchill School is complete. The district is waiting for furniture, but the space will be used by staff for other needs for the remainder of the school year.  In the 2023-24 school year, the spaces will be used as classrooms.
