Election preview: County and state races are focus of Illinois primary June 28

Illinois voters will go to the polls June 28 to select their parties’ nominees for office in the November election.

If you prefer, early voting is being conducted locally from June 13 through June 27. Voters also can choose mail-in ballots. 

The last day to request a mail-in ballot is June 23. Ballots must be postmarked by June 28 to be counted. Mail-in ballot applications are available through the Cook County Clerk’s website cookcountyclerkil.gov.  

Early voting sites include Prairie State College conference center, 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, June 13-18, June 20 through June 25 and June 27, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays, June 19 and June 26.

On the Democratic ticket

Federal candidates are seeking reelection are U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and 2nd Congressional District U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly.

Incumbent J.B. Pritzker is facing Beverly Miles in the governor’s race. Incumbent Attorney General Kwame Raoul has no opposition. There’s a four-way race between Alexi Giannoulias, David H. Moore, Anna M. Valencia and Sidney Moore to replace retiring Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.  Comptroller Susana A. Mendoza and Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs are unopposed in their bids for reelection.

Kelly is unopposed in her bid for a 4-year term as 2nd Congressional District Democratic State Central Committeewoman; Will Davis faces opposition from Adam Shorter for a 4-year term as 2nd Congressional District Democratic State Central Committeeman.

State elected officials seeking reelection are Sen. Napoleon Harris in the 15th District, which includes Homewood; Sen. Patrick Joyce in the 40th District, which includes Flossmoor; Rep. Will Davis in the 30th District, which includes Homewood; Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin in the 38th District, which includes Flossmoor.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is being challenged by Richard R. Boykin in her bid for reelection. Donna Miler is seeking reelection to the Cook County Board in the 6th District, which includes Homewood. There are four challengers for the Cook County Board in the 5th District, which includes Flossmoor – Vernard Alsberry, Kierra Williams, Jaylin McClinton and Monica Gordon.

Other county offices on the ballot include: Clerk – Karen A. Yarbrough, unopposed; Sheriff – Thomas J. Dart, incumbent, and challengers Noland Rivera and LaTonya Ruffin; Treasurer – Maria Pappas, unopposed; Assessor – Fritz Kaegi, incumbent, and challenger Kari K. Steele.

Running for Democratic Township Committeeperson are Monica Gordon and Adam Winston for Bloom Township; Vernard Alsberry for Bremen Township; Calvin Jordan in Rich Township; Napoleon Harris III, Terry R. Wells, Troy O’Quin and Thaddeus Jones in Thornton Township.

There are several Illinois Appellate Court and Cook County Judicial Circuit Court judge positions, and Bernadette Barrett and Jim Gleffe are running in the 15th Subcircuit, which includes parts of Homewood and Flossmoor. 

On the Republican ticket

Seven candidates are running for the U.S. Senate nomination – Casey Chlebek, Peggy Hubbard, Robert “Bobby” Piton, Jimmy Lee Tillman II, Anthony W. Williams, Kathy Salvi and Matthew “Matt” Dubiel. Three candidates are running for the 2nd Congressional District seat – Shane Cultra, Ashley Ramos and Thomas Lynch.

Running for the nomination for governor are Darren Bailey, Paul Schimpf, Richard C. Irvin, Gary Rabine, Max Solomon, Jesse Sullivan.

Candidates for Illinois Attorney General are Steve Kim, David Shestokas, Thomas DeVore; Illinois Secretary of State candidates are Dan Brady and John C. Milhiser; Illinois Comptroller candidate is Shannon L. Teresi; Illinois Treasurer candidate is Tom Demmer.

There is no candidate for the Illinois Senate 15th District, which includes Homewood. In the Illinois Senate 40th District, which includes Flossmoor, candidates are Philip Nagel and Krystyna Vela. Patricia Bonk is running for the 30th House District, which includes Homewood; Tom Toolis is running in the 38th House District, which includes Flossmoor.

There are no candidates for Cook County Board president, Cook County clerk, Cook County sheriff, Cook County treasurer, Cook County assessor. There are no candidates for the Cook County Board 5th District, which includes Flossmoor, nor the Cook County 6th District, which includes Homewood.

There are no GOP nominees for Illinois Appellate Court or Cook County Judicial Circuit judgeships. There are no candidates for the Cook County 15th Judicial Subcircuit, which includes Flossmoor. 

For Republican Township Committeeperson: No candidate in Bloom Township; Max Solomon and Carl Ivan in Bremen Township; Eric M. Wallace in Rich Township; no candidate in Thornton Township.
