Variance approved for Homewood seafood restaurant

A new seafood restaurant and delivery service had a parking variance approved by the Homewood village board Tuesday.

Crab Bagz plans to open at 18681 Dixie Highway, formerly the location of Lily Pad resale store. The building also contains Salon Life and Barton Chiropractic. The restaurant will move into a space that’s been vacant for more than a year. The variance allows the business to operate with fewer parking spaces than usually required by village code.

Crab Bagz plans to be open six days a week with a 50-seat capacity and additional space in the bar and lounge area. Owners plan to expand to include a crab boil catering and delivery service.

On a special use application, owner Paris Walker said she will hire 15-25 part-time and full-time employees including hosts, bartenders, cooks, dishwashers, servers and other staff with plans to add delivery drivers.

The restaurant will serve customizable boils that will include a pound of crab, shrimp or a combination of the two with potato, corn on the cob and andouille sausage.

“I salute anyone serving a restaurant during these times. I look forward to having another seafood restaurant,” Trustee Barbara Dawkins said. “I’m excited about it.”

In other business, the board awarded a street resurfacing project to D Construction of Coal City for $527,187.68. The firm was the lowest of three bidders, and the quote was lower than the village engineer’s estimate.

Portions of Spruce Road, Olive Road, Elder Road, Delta Road, Jodi Terrace and Ashland Avenue will be improved. The work will include resurfacing, patching, curb replacement, sidewalk removal and replacement and sod restoration.
