BLACK JOURNALISTS IN HISTORY
Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) was a prominent journalist and activist who fought for women’s suffrage, and against white mob violence.
Her willingness to openly confront white women in the suffrage movement who ignored lynching caused them to shun her. She co-founded the first suffrage club for Black women in 1913 and is credited with integrating the women’s suffrage movement.
Wells-Barnett founded the first kindergarten for Black children in Chicago. Her home at 3624 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1995.
