Chronicle seeks new third partner as Houlihan retires

With Tom Houlihan’s retirement from this newspaper at the end of 2020, the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle has an exciting opportunity for change as our towns’ premier outlet for local news.

It is also an opportunity for an H-F area resident to contribute to our community’s continued well-being as the Chronicle’s co-owner and third partner.

We are looking for someone who is committed to honest, unbiased, reliable reporting in Homewood and Flossmoor and who will work with the Chronicle’s other two owners, Marilyn Thomas and Eric Crump, to make that happen.

Houlihan has been with the H-F Chronicle since its founding in the fall of 2014. He brought decades of experience as a reporter and editor at community newspapers to this publication and, ideally, the new third partner will also have journalism experience. In his October 1 Chronicle column, Houlihan indicated that he would prefer a Flossmoor resident – the other two partners are from Homewood – and a person of color to better reflect the diversity of our communities.

Most of all, though, we are looking for a person who is willing to work for quality journalism in our two towns and can help us achieve our goal of making the Chronicle a first-rate newspaper for years to come. We believe that the Chronicle, six years after its start, has made great progress and enjoys wide community support. Long-term sustainability is still a major goal and will require even more support from Homewood and Flossmoor residents as we move forward together.

Owning a stake in the local paper is a huge responsibility. We must also point out that at the Chronicle, ownership brings no monetary compensation. Ad revenue pays our expenses for printing and mailing and compensates professionals who work part-time at the paper, but the partners are unpaid. Ownership at the Chronicle can be compared to being on the board of a not-for-profit organization. It requires vison and passion and caring about the future of the towns that we love.

We know that the Chronicle makes a difference in Homewood and Flossmoor and that will continue after a new third partner joins us. If you’d like to learn more, please contact Eric Crump at [email protected].

Note: The Chronicle’s first iteration, the Homewood Chronicle, began as an online newspaper in June 2014.
