The Homewood Science Center is hosting its annual Walk Walton event Sunday, Oct. 18, with COVID-19 precautions in place.
Families and COVID-safe groups of no more than eight people can walk through Izaak Walton Preserve on a 30-minute guided walk. All groups will complete the walk with a bioblitz, a concentrated citizen effort to identify plant and animal species in a designated area. HSC has scoped out 10 different areas at the preserve for bioblitz meet-ups.
The registration fee will be $10 for adults and includes up to three free tickets for children 12 and younger.
“Utilizing this plan, there will be no more than 100 people at the preserve at one time and they will be kept widely separated,” said Edie Dobrez, HSC director. The event will start at 8:30 a.m. Groups will begin a walk every 15 minutes. The event will wrap up at participant will get a backpack, a donut and warm drink.
Participants will be led on their walks and through the bioblitz exercise by conservation ecology middle school interns and an expert volunteer.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the after-walk party and activities for students will not be available.
