Despite the warm temperatures and high humidity, Liam Hughes, Liam Nelson and Aaron McIntyre picked up shovels to clear out the weeds and tend to the plants that are flourishing.

The pollinator garden was part of a spring 2019 ecology program offered at HSC. It gave students a chance to take over a small plot of dirt just outside the HSC front doors.

Led by HSC board member Patti Messersmith, a senior educator at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the program gave students a chance to study pollinator insects and their role in nature. The program also gave them insights into the role of the plant biodiversity.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a second session of the program wasn’t possible this spring, but the three workers did their best to give the plants some tender loving care so they continue to thrive.
