West Suburban Teachers Union, Local 571, recently announced the names of area students awarded the Mary Wheeler Scholarship, including Janellie Roach, a student at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Janellie was among seven recipients of the $2,950 scholarships.

“Winners exhibited the highest academic standards and involvement in school and community service,” union officials said in the announcement.

The scholarship is named for Mary Wheeler, who taught at Proviso High School from 1924 to 1965 and was active in local, state and national teachers unions.
