Coping with COVID: April 13

Homewood and Flossmoor have adjusted vehicle sticker enforcement rules to account for COVID-19 restrictions. Homewood trustees to meet by phone Tuesday. State legislature ensnared in apparent Catch-22.

Homewood and Flossmoor vehicle sticker enforcement delayed. With village hall closed in both village, vehicle sticker sales have been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

In Homewood, residents will be able to start purchasing stickers on June 1. All motor vehicles registered to a Homewood address, or housed at a Homewood address, must have a current Village vehicle license affixed to the windshield by June 30. Vehicle owners whose vehicles are registered with the Village will be mailed a vehicle sticker application prior to June 1.

In Flossmoor, all vehicle sticker and animal tags applications must be mailed or dropped off in the village’s parking lot or police department drop boxes. The village is waiving the late fees for the 2020-21 season and will delay enforcement of the display of vehicle stickers until May 15.

Homewood trustees to meet virtually. The Homewood Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, but they will connect by phone. A limited number of village staff will be present in the village hall board room, 2020 Chestnut Road, and the public will be able to attend in person as long as individuals comply with physical distancing requirements.

Catch-22At the daily COVID-19 briefing on Monday, Gov. J.B. Pritzker was asked by a reporter why the Illinois legislature is not meeting virtually, as many local government bodies are doing. Pritzker said state law requires the legislature to meet in person, and the only way to change that law to allow virtual meetings would be to have the legislature meet. In person. But the stay-at-home order mandates no groups of more than 10 gather, and the House has 118 members and the Senate has 59. The exemptions for essential workers mentions “Essential Governmental Functions” but does not specifically mention the state legislature.
