Your holiday decorations can serve a good cause when you order trees and wreaths in the annual Cancer Support Center drive, and this year customers can have their trees delivered in an environmentally friendly manner.
GoodSpeed Cycle of Homewood will deliver trees and wreaths by bicycle.
“This year, out of the kindness of their hearts, Goodspeed has pledged to donate the proceeds from their two-mile delivery fee to the center,” said Dyandra Morris-Inniss, CSC marketing coordinator.
No, the cyclist will not be balancing trees on the handlebars. Steve Buchtel of GoodSpeed said deliveries would be made using an e-bike and a trailer.
“Who needs reindeer? I can stack about six trees at a time onto the trailer,” Buchtel said. “Stack height is the limiting factor. Weight’s no issue.”
The bike tree delivery service will cost $20, and GoodSpeed is donating all of it back to the Cancer Support Center.
“At the shop, many of our lives have been profoundly impacted by cancer,” Buchtel said. “We know how important the CSC’s services are for coping and survival.”
A delivery map will be posted at the CSC website showing areas eligible for bicycle delivery, he said. The area covers most of Homewood and Flossmoor, generally from 175th Street on the north to Vollmer Road on the south between Halsted Street and Governors Highway.
“It’s neighborhoods where we know there are good bike routes too,” Buchtel said. “My hope is people have so many trees delivered that I’ll need to throw an extra battery on the bike.”
Buchtel is an experienced tree-delivery cyclist. He said he has picked up his family’s tree every year by bike. With the trailer, rated at 300 pounds capacity, he figured he could deliver quite a few more trees this year.
The scheduled date for picking up ordered trees is Dec. 6 in downtown Homewood, the same day as the village’s Holiday Lights celebration.
“Maybe it helps some Homewood families leave their car parked and walk up to the tree lighting, and it could raise some extra dough for the Center,” he said.
This is one of several events the Cancer Support Center sponsors to raise funds that help underwrite its free services for those dealing with a cancer diagnosis, and for their families.
Pre-orders are being accepted through Sunday, Nov. 24. Options are $40 for a 24-inch Fraser Fir wreath; $60 for a 6- to 8-foot Fraser Fir tree; $70 for an 8- to 10-foot tree.
Trees will be available for pick-up from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at Maple and Martin Avenues, across from village hall.
