This month, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Lisa Grant of Grant Orthodontics in Homewood is raising awareness of breast cancer among her young patients.

For the past several years, Grant has been making a $100 donation in October to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for every new patient she sees during the month. The foundation’s goal is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
  Each patient who choses pink
  bracket ties on their braces
gets a pink ribbon to display
  in the Grant Orthodontics
  office in Homewood.

Grant chose this organization because her mother suffered from breast cancer and she wants to promote awareness of the disease.

But reaching kids is something different. They may have heard of breast cancer but not been aware of the role they can play in sharing a message about the need for education on the topic. Now, there’s pink in their smile. Pink is the awareness color for breast cancer.

This month, Grant is donating $5 to the Komen Foundation for every patient she sees who chooses pink ties, the strips that hold the braces in place and exert pressure so the teeth move for their realignment.

These patients will have the pink ties on until their next appointment in four to eight weeks.

Grant Orthodontics estimates it will see more than 150 patients going “pink” during their October appointment, giving the Komen Foundation an additional $750 or more.
